The artisans José Angulo and Raquel Montes exhibit in July at the Tourist Office

In this space we will be able to see a small sample of the work they do, with ceramic and silver pieces, respectively

The Mijas Pueblo Tourist Office not only opens its doors to inform us about the extensive tourist offer in the municipality, but also opens its doors on a monthly basis to showcase the work of local artisans. Until the end of July we can get to know the art of the ceramist José Angulo and Raquel Montes, dedicated to silver jewellery, thanks to the collaboration agreement between the Tourism and Culture departments of the Mijas Town Hall and the Mijas Artisans Association, made up of more than 30 artisans from different disciplines.

"In the Tourist Office all the artisans of the municipality are welcome, those who work with their hands so that we can see how they make and create something out of nothing. All of them can offer their small exhibitions here to make themselves known to all the tourists who come here, and there are plenty of them at any time of the day", said the councillor for Tourism, Francisco Jerez (Vox). For his part, the councillor for Culture, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP), added that "this office not only serves to inform about the commercial, cultural or gastronomic spaces, but also to promote our crafts, which have a lot of value, in fact, the Junta de Andalucía considers them to be an element of interest."

After finishing his art studies, José Angulo decided 37 years ago that ceramics was his thing. Since then, he has been working on demand, as well as giving tile painting and pottery classes in his workshop, located in Puerta del Ágora. Now he is also exhibiting a small sample of his work in the Tourist Office. "In my display stand you can see a part of the process of the two techniques I use, majolica and dry string, so that people can see how I paint on ceramics, and then I have also displayed some of my finished pieces", explained the artist.

Raquel Montes, also known as 'Pitiplata', has been a professional artisan for five years but her vocation started almost two decades ago and she is one of the new members of the Mijas Artisans Association. This woman from Almeria, dedicated to silver jewellery design, is grateful for the opportunity to show part of her work in this space, on this occasion with pieces inspired by the sea and Picasso.  "I like working with silver, many techniques and tools are used, such as the blowtorch, both for melting and soldering, and machines such as the cylinder", said Montes about her profession.
