If there is a truly magical place to experience the Night of San Juan it is on the beach, of course. In La Cala de Mijas the celebration had everything you need for an unforgettable evening: live music, entertainment for the whole family, midnight swims in the sea and, of course, the burning of the 'júas' (dolls) made by the local women who have been creating them for the occasion for more than 40 years.
The event was held at the Plaza de El Torreón, where locals and tourists gathered to take part in the festivities and welcome the summer. The Department for Festivities and Traditions was in charge of organising the evening, in which no detail was missing, as pointed out by the town's mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), who also stressed that "Mijas celebrates this tradition looking forward to leaving the bad things behind and hoping that only good things will come: a better summer that joins a much better year".
For her part, the councillor for Festivities and Traditions, Silvia Marín (PP), who has worked with those involved in the organisation of the event, pointed out that "it is a complete night, in which we all wish for something nice, something good for this year that awaits us, and after all the work done, we can only hope that everyone's wishes come true".
Collaboration
The Town Hall worked hand in hand with the Youth Association of La Cala and the beach bar owners of La Cala to ensure that nothing was lacking during the night of San Juan, including live music on stage that made young and old dance, from the early hours of the night, games and food. The president of the La Cala Youth Association, Paula Moreno, stated that "we received the proposal from the Town Hall to set up the bar in San Juan and we thought it was a good idea, as we are a new association that started in January, and we are having many projects and we thought it was a very interesting idea to promote ourselves".
Local police officers, firefighters and Civil Protection volunteers were in charge of the security of the event, who guaranteed the correct development of the activities and ensured the well-being of all the attendees. The clean-up began at around 4:00 hours, when the attendees were leaving.
Meeting friends and family
The night was an invitation to enjoy with friends and family in the seaside town of Mijas, which every year is committed to this tradition. After the burning of the júa, many participants went to the beach to fulfil the ritual of dipping their feet in the sea, some even swam and entire families were present, from parents with babies to grandparents, even pets.
Burning of the 'júas''
Fulfill the traditions surrounding this magical night, as did the young people Daniela Alcalá, Diego González and Antonia Lérida, who followed step by step the guidelines, must be done to make the wishes of San Juan come true.
On the night of San Juan, the burning of the júas is a must. This year the neighbours who have been in charge of creating them for more than forty years once again fulfilled the tradition, preparing for this occasion a júa inspired by zoos and natural life. All of this was done with recycled materials.
This way, La Cala was illuminated by the flames of the fire, burning all the bad and attracting all the good.
