After the proclamation, the poster announcing the fiestas was unveiled and the programme of activities for the days of the fair was explained

On Thursday, the flamenco dancer Tatiana Cuevas described being chosen by the Mijas Town Hall to give the traditional opening speech at the Feria de Las Lagunas as a "gift". In gratitude, Cuevas wanted her speech, at this key event in the local festive calendar, to be full of emotional words and, given her artistic nature, full of music and dance. In fact, the 25 year old, who is also director of the Punto Danza academy, linked her speech with different performances by her groups Yerbabuena and Coral, the Unión del Cante Choir and the violinist David Moñiz.

This year, the event was held in the Plaza de La Candelaria in Las Lagunas and was attended by numerous family members, friends, neighbours and students of Cuevas, as well as the municipal authorities and representatives of the Festivities Department of the Mijas Town Hall. During the proclamation, Cuevas made a beautiful description of her childhood and youth in the town of Las Lagunas, especially in the area of El Coto, where she grew up and where she began to discover that dance would later become her great passion and her profession. After years of studies and training away from her homeland, the town crier stressed that today she " feels fortunate" to be working in Las Lagunas, a lively town that has been growing and filling up with life, to the point that we make up more than half of the municipality".

Cuevas also talked about her "beloved fair in Las Lagunas" and how she counted the days until this great festival arrived so that she could dance in the municipal booth. Now, she pointed out, "I live the fair in a different way, watching my students dance with the same enthusiasm that I showed when I was little".

The numerous applauses marked the end of this proclamation but not of the event itself, as immediately, the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), and the artist herself proceeded to unveil the poster announcing Las Lagunas Fair, which will take place from the 26th to the 30th of this month. Mijas Comunicación has been in charge of the design of this image which, in this case, highlights the figure of a woman in a flamenco dress, accompanied by other images related to these popular festivities, including a rider on horseback, the typical lanterns and the traditional big wheel attraction.

Programme of the fair

The councillor for Festivities of Mijas Town Hall, Silvia Marín (PP), accompanied by members of the Festivities Department, then presented the programme of activities planned to celebrate the big days of Las Lagunas. On the first day, Wednesday 26th of June, the switch-on of the artistic lighting of the fairgrounds will take place and the candidates for queen, king, ladies and companions of the festivities of Las Lagunas will be presented, ending the night with a performance by the group Maleando. Also that day, the attractions will have a reduced price of 2.50 euros and from 19 to 21 hours the music and the characteristic sound of these attractions will be eliminated.

On Thursday 27th the traditional celebratory dinner for our elderly will be held in the playground of the María Zambrano school, while in the Municipal Booth the king and queen of the children's and baby categories will be chosen by lottery. Flamenco will be very present with the dance groups of Ana Mari Tineo and the Aprende y Baila academy, and the concert by the Sevillian artist Demarco.

The performance of the singer Vicco will mark the evening of Friday 28th, which will also feature the participation of the dance groups of Punto Danza, directed by Tatiana Cuevas. As a souvenir of the fair, locals and visitors will also be able to enjoy a fun photo booth for free.

On Saturday 29th, the Day Fair will open its doors, which this year will take place on Miguel Hernández Avenue, with the presence of the groups Aprende y Baila, and live music by the Trenzao. In the evening, the Expresión Academy will perform and we will close the evening with a concert by the brothers Kiko and Shara.

Sunday 30th will be dedicated to traditions, with the popular threshing exhibition which has been held in the morning at the Cortijo Don Elías for some years now. Then the day fair will continue, this time with the entertainment of Pop FM, and in the municipal booth, the Mojinos Escozíos will be in charge of closing the festivities in La Laguna.

The mayoress

To close the ceremony, the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), addressed Tatiana's family, saying that " you can be very proud to have a daughter who, at only 25 years old, has had such a long career in a world as complicated as flamenco and dance, and only those of us who have travelled for work know how hard it is to be away from your homeland to grow as a person and do what you love".

As for the festivities in Las Lagunas, Mata stressed the importance of " supporting the traditional" and encouraged the residents present there to "take advantage of these moments that life offers us, live together, have a good time, dance and enjoy this fair, the first of the year in our town and with which we also welcome the summer in style".
