The Tourism Department of the Mijas Town Hall presented last Wednesday 12th, the first edition of the Mijas Sun & Golf Tour, an event made up of five qualifying rounds and a final in which players with a valid Royal Spanish Golf Federation licence will be able to participate.
The tournament will start this Friday, 14th of June, at El Chaparral Golf Club and will last until the 24th of August, when the final will take place, visiting the following courses in the municipality: Miraflores Golf (June 28th), Cerrado del Águila Golf & Resort (July 5th), La Noria Golf (July 19th) and La Cala Golf Club (August 2nd). The tour will end at Mijas Golf Los Lagos, where there will also be a gala dinner at Hotel La Zambra.
The councillor for Tourism, Francisco Jerez (Vox), presented the initiative, announcing that the registration period is now open. “Mijas is a benchmark for golf tourism in Europe, not only because of the number of courses, a total of twelve, but also because of their orography, which makes it a unique destination. The golf industry is an important source of income, visitors and, in short, wealth for our municipality and, as the specialised platform Travellyze published a few weeks ago, it is experiencing a significant transformation, aimed at sustainability and environmental awareness, the search for experiences that go beyond the game itself and the adaptation of golf courses to be more accessible”, he said.
A unique event
The presentation was also attended by members of the board of directors of the Mijas Golf Courses Association, who are also representatives of the participatingn golf courses, and Luis Navarro, tournament director and marketing director of the magazine Andalucía Golf, who thanked the Mijas Town Hall for setting up the tour, and also encouraged golf lovers to participate.
“It is a unique event on the Costa del Sol, which has the essential collaboration of the Town Hall. They are the best federated players of each level and it is raising a great expectation. In fact, the first event on the El Chaparral course is practically full”, said the president of the Mijas Golf Courses Association and director of El Chaparral, Domingo Gavira, who also mentioned that “it will be played in individual ‘stableford’ mode, with three categories: the first and second category, a special ‘scratch’ prize for the best player, let’s say, semi-professional, and then a special prize for ladies, because we always want to support women’s sport”.
For his part, Luis Navarro pointed out that the capacity for each event will be one hundred players and that they also want to promote female participation: “There are different golf courses and this is a great attraction for players. There will be nine winners from each course who will compete in the final, to be held on the 24th of August in Los Lagos”, he said, adding that “the winners will receive vouchers to play on the tour’s golf courses for a year, obviously with certain limitations on use and in a proportion, depending on the ranking”.
Those interested can participate in one or more rounds and can sign up through the platform golfdirecto.com, as long as they have a valid Spanish Federation licence. The registration fees will be set by each golf club, although they will be quite similar, and will include a welcome pack for the players, among other courtesy details.
