Record statistics. A historic month. Better, almost impossible. These are the words used by the main hoteliers in our municipality, such as those responsible for the TRH Mijas, the VIK Gran Hotel Costa del Sol, La Cala Resort and La Zambra, to describe the month of May that we are leaving behind. According to data made public by the Association of Hotel Businessmen of the Costa del Sol (Aehcos) Mijas was crowned last month as the town with the highest hotel occupancy in the province of Malaga with a figure that reached 92.2%, while the average was well below: 87.65%. For Mijas tourism, the May results for this year 2024 represent an increase of 2.8 % over the same period last year, which intensifies the trend that the local service sector has been experiencing since January.
For the mayoress Ana Mata (PP), “the statistics and forecasts published by the hoteliers of the Costa del Sol endorse the strategic positioning of Mijas and its tourist hegemony, which is a reason for all of us to be proud of. These excellent results should encourage us to continue working for excellence and to offer our visitors a unique and unforgettable experience. As the campaign we are presenting to the tourist market this year and which we announced at the last edition of Fitur, ‘Mijas, as you like it’, reflects, there are as many Mijas as there are visitors, Mijas is not only a destination, it is a sensation”.
Foreign visitors
International tourism, mainly from Europe, has been very important in the occupancy rate figures for May, at 80% compared to 20% for national visitors.
In any case, only two municipalities in Malaga are above 90% occupancy: Mijas leading the way, followed by Benalmádena with one point less, 91.22%. In third place we find Ronda (86.58 %), Malaga city (86.33 %), Fuengirola (85.15 %) and Marbella (82.32 %).
High expectations
With this background and taking into account the trend registered during the first five months of the year, it is logical that the executive committee of Aehcos and the hoteliers of Mijas have in mind that the occupancy rate during June could be very good, reaching up to 87.16% in the province, which would mean five percentage points more than the rate registered in the same month last year.
As for July, the average occupancy rate of tourist accommodation establishments in Malaga is estimated at 85.08%, also higher than in 2023, when an occupancy rate of 84.63% was recorded, with an upward trend.
In short, optimistic forecasts for the sector for the summer season, although, always watching carefully, Aehcos reminds, the profitability of the establishments and the average gross income per guest staying, which will determine the economic impact on the territory and the benefits in terms of employment.
Tourist offices
The visitor data from the Mijas tourist offices, located in La Cala and in the village itself, show the increase in visitors that the town has witnessed during the first five months of this year 2024. From January to May 2024, 69,485 people visited the tourist offices in Mijas, 3,830 more than in 2023, which was 65,655.
