Mijas launches a new awareness campaign to prevent forest fires

  • The municipality is included in the forest fire risk areas of Andalusia
  • Además de las autoridades municipales, también acudieron a la presentación representantes de Bomberos Mijas y Protección Civil.

The campaign will be disseminated through the different media of Mijas Comunicación and through the social media of the Town Hall

Mijas Town Hall aims to raise public awareness of the importance of preventing forest fires. For this reason, as explained this Tuesday by the mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), accompanied by the councillor for Firefighters, Francisco Jerez (Vox), and the councillor for the Environment, Marco Cortés (PP), an information campaign has been launched which will be disseminated through the institutional social media and Mijas Communication.

Mijas, due to its climate and natural characteristics, has a high risk of forest fires, especially during the summer. Moreover, the town is included in the forest fire risk areas of Andalusia, as established in the regional regulations (Law 5/1999, of 29 June, ‘Prevention and fight against forest fires and its regulations’).

"The campaign has a very clear message and that is that no 'spark' should kill our happiness, our environment, our lives. In Mijas, unfortunately, we have suffered very serious fires that have caused a lot of damage and irreparable consequences for our natural environment. Prevention is the best way to fight fires", explained the mayoress of Mijas.

'A single spark can ruin a whole summer', 'Don't let the spark of summer turn into flames' and 'Let sparks fly, but only between you two' are the three main messages of the campaign. The aim is to compare everyday summer images and to convey how a small gesture, a small ‘spark’, can cause a fire with irreversible consequences. The campaign will be disseminated in both English and Spanish and will also include audiovisual material.

Specific prohibitions

From the 1st of June to the 15th of October, a series of specific prohibitions have been established by the Junta de Andalucía in order to prevent fires. These are established in the regional order of the 21st of May 2009, which determines that the use of fire and the transit of motor vehicles is prohibited in forest areas and in their area of influence (including riverbanks and streams), that is, in a strip of 400 metres around these areas.

Barbecues are therefore not permitted, even in places set aside for them, such as recreational or camping areas, nor may agricultural or plant waste be burnt. In fact, in the case of Mijas, all the barbecues in the El Esparragal park have been sealed off as a preventive measure.
