Mijas can refill swimming pools from Saturday 1st of June

  • El rellenado se hará con las cantidades indispensables para reponer las pérdidas por evaporación, limpieza de filtros y para garantizar la calidad sanitaria del agua.

Showers in sports facilities and swimming pools and public water fountains will also be allowed

From this Saturday, 1st June, until the 30th of September, Mijas has the authorisation of the Junta de Andalucía for certain water uses, such as the refilling of swimming pools or the irrigation of gardens, always in accordance with the Resolution of the General Secretariat for Water of 27th of May 2024.

The Community of Municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol, through its water operator Acosol, was in charge of requesting the exception of different water uses during this summer for the eleven municipalities that are part of it; among them, Mijas. Finally, the Junta de Andalucía has authorised the exceptions requested, allowing, therefore, between the 1st of June and the 30th of September of this year, “the partial refilling of swimming pools’, both public and private, ‘as long as they have a water recirculation system’. Furthermore, this refilling of swimming pools, not filling, may only be done ‘in the amounts necessary to replace losses due to evaporation, filter cleaning and to guarantee the sanitary quality of the water”.

Likewise, in this period of time, showers are allowed to operate in establishments and swimming pools where the use of showers is compulsory and provided that they “have a timed push-button system, sensors or devices with a similar function”.

The operation of public drinking fountains has also been authorised, which, like showers, must have timed push-buttons, sensors or other similar devices.

Garden irrigation

The fourth use permitted until the end of September is the “survival irrigation of gardens with a maximum of 400 cubic metres per hectare per month”, which will be permitted with “a maximum irrigation frequency of one day per week”. In addition, the Resolution of the General Secretariat for Water clarifies that “irrigation will be carried out with water that is not suitable for human consumption, when this type of resource exists”, and that the 400 cubic metres will be allowed “when there are species of special botanical interest”,

Finally, the “use of potable water for the cleaning and disinfection of roads by means of energy-saving pressure washers” was also authorised.
