In addition, on the 5th of June there will be a series of talks ‘Get to know the history of your documents’

From the 5th to the 9th of June the International Archives Week will be commemorated, and Mijas is going to celebrate it in the best way: with open days and a series of talks. The activity aims to promote the importance of this service to the whole population.

On the 3rd, 4th and 6th the Municipal Historical Archive will open its doors from 10:00 to 13:00 hours with an exhibition of some of the documents that are kept in this place, and on the 5th, from 17:00 hours, the series of talks ‘Know the history of your documents’ will take place. As the coordinator of the Historical Heritage department, Desirée Piñero, explained during the presentation of these conferences, "both talks will reflect the two areas of the archive. On the one hand, management and, on the other, the user's view, one of them will show the experience of using the documents in research for the creation of a family tree".

Attendees will be able to access inhabitants' registers, documents referring to important historical events in the municipality and much more. For her part, the councillor for the area, Lourdes Burgos (PP), said that "of course we are going to continue with the task, which is not as known as we would like, of disseminating everything that is done here and to make known to the whole population the work that is done, not only of identification and archiving but also of dissemination. It is our responsibility to tell the people of Mijas about it so that they can enjoy it".

One of the speakers, the technician of this area, Patricia Núñez, said that "the idea is to bring the Historical Archive closer to the ordinary citizen because, normally, most of the users who attend are researchers, properly speaking, and what we want is to demonstrate or show that you don't necessarily need to be a researcher to go to the archive".  "These informative activities represent a unique opportunity to show users the importance of the Historical Archive for future generations to reconstruct and understand the history of Mijas, which is why it is so important to conserve and care for our archive", Burgos concluded. So if you want more information about your family or the municipality, this event shows you how to do it. The activity is free and registration is not required.
