María José has been a user at this Day Centre since 2018. She is in the residence and yesterday the company Angels Caring Costa del Sol from Malaga gave her a watch that will allow her to be permanently monitored and geolocated from now on.

Like María José, who was "very happy" with her new watch, a total of five users of AFA Fuengirola-Mijas Costa will be able to use this device for about a year for free, although the pilot test, "to see how everything works" will last around a month, depending on each patient, explained the manager of Angels Caring Costa del Sol, María Ángeles Budia. The head of the company visited the Adolfo Suárez centre to personally hand over the watches to the users and explain to the relatives, together with the company team, how these ‘Angels on watch’, which is the commercial name of the watches, work and why they were made.

"I have been a nurse for many years and I have worked a lot with the elderly and I have seen the need. And so I thought it was the best thing for them, because there are a lot of elderly people, many foreigners too, who are alone, and so with these watches at least they will be controlled and monitored and their vital signs will also be controlled", Budia explained.

24 hours geolocated and monitored
While users are wearing their watches, they are not only geolocated thanks to the GPS system they incorporate, but their vital signs are also monitored. "Their blood pressure, oxygen, sugar.. are measured", Budia added, and the watch even identifies if the patient falls. All the data is transmitted in real time via a mobile application, so that family members and caregivers can keep an eye on the patient at all times, wherever they are.
"I think this watch is fantastic because this device can also be used to detect other diseases. In the case of my father, for example, who has coronary heart disease, any impact he has, the watch automatically alerts you. So it's reassuring for us that they have this watch, because my father, for example, has to be tested five times a day for his coronary problem and this means that he is monitored 24 hours a day", said Maribel Madrid, a relative of one of the AFA users who also received his new watch.

"The GPS system that the watch has is very useful for our users, to locate them in case they get lost or disoriented", added Lebrón, who thanked Angels Caring Costa del Sol for choosing his centre to carry out its pilot test. "The users will be able to use these watches for free, we told their relatives about it and they are very happy".
In total, Budia explained, this gift is worth around 3,500 euros "and we are going to offer it to these AFA users because we think it is very useful for people with dementia and because we believe that they are also the best users so that we can check that everything is working well", he explained.
