  • La alcaldesa de Mijas, Ana Mata, y el presidente de la Asamblea Local de Cruz Roja Mijas, Luis Miguel Díaz.

The event has the collaboration of the Mijas Town Hall through the Social Inclusion Department

Mijas will host this Thursday, 23rd of May, the second edition of the Employment Day ‘Ocúpate’ by Cruz Roja Costa del Sol. The event will be held at the Cortijo Lagar Don Elías (Las Lagunas) from 9.30 to 14.00 hours and will be attended by twenty companies. This was announced by the mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), who together with the president of the Local Assembly of the Mijas Red Cross, Luis Miguel Díaz, presented the event. The councillor highlighted the large participation of companies, especially those related to the service sector, who are looking for new employees for their staff. "Public-private collaboration is essential to promote employment, so when the Red Cross requested a space to hold this fair, we did not hesitate. Especially when we are talking about an entity as consolidated as the Red Cross, which does invaluable social work", said Mata, who also reported that the City Council collaborates with this initiative through the area of Social Inclusion, which has earmarked 10,000 euros for this purpose. "Our goal is very clear, is to try that all those Mijeños and Mijeñas who live in our municipality have the opportunity to work here", added mayoress.

The event is part of the Red Cross employment plan being developed in the province of Malaga and is aimed at the unemployed population. "It is framed within the employability improvement alliances that we carry out from what is called the Social Business Challenge 'Opportunities that change lives' by the Red Cross, where companies with a social conscience open in a continuous way and create opportunities that undoubtedly change lives", explained the president of the Mijas Red Cross.

  • El año pasado la cita contó con una gran participación de empresas y de público en general.

From 9.30 to 14.00, at the Cortijo Lagar Don Elías

The ‘Ocúpate’ programme will begin at 8.30 am with a networking session between the participating companies, before opening to the public at 9.30 am until 2.00 pm. On this occasion, entities such as Ilunion, Holidays World, Wyndham Hotels & Resorts and Reserva del Higuerón, among others, will take part.

"It is a space for collaboration between the business community and those looking for employment", said the president of the Red Cross, who concluded by stating that "for us, just as I understand for the public administration and specifically the Mijas Town Hall, the ultimate goal is to ensure that the Social Services area has less and less work, precisely because employment is what makes people autonomous, independent and not dependent on social assistance. Therefore, with this goal, with this common objective that we all have, working hand in hand, we can achieve it".

The initiative has already taken place this year in other municipalities such as Vélez-Málaga, Marbella and Antequera. Those interested in participating should first send an email to esther.perez@cruzroja.es, carmen.nacarino@cruzroja.es or berasa@cruzroja.es or register via the following link.

Employment

Thanks to 'Ocúpate', according to the local president of the Red Cross, 150 people got a job. The Mijas councillor highlighted, on the other hand, that the unemployment rate in the town as of April 2024 is 13.63%, lower than in 2023, when on the same date it was 14.61%. "Currently the number of unemployed people is 5977 compared to 6276 people last year", said Mata, who finally encouraged the local unemployed to participate in this employment day, "because they will have the opportunity to find a job that suits their needs".
