Every 10th of May is the World Day for this autoimmune disease which, in Spain, affects around 100,000 people

As in many other towns in Spain, the façade of La Cala's branch office was lit up purple on Friday to commemorate World Lupus Day, showing Mijas' support for the nearly 100,000 people in Spain affected by this chronic disease, mostly women.

The most distinctive sign of lupus is the appearance of spots on the nose and cheeks, shaped like butterfly wings, other symptoms could be muscle and joint pain, hair loss, ulcers, kidney problems, depression, anaemia and severe headaches among others. This disease does not have a cure yet and not many people know about it, in fact, only four out of ten Spaniards know what lupus is.
