Mijas celebrated on Sunday the I Green Expedition. It was a family and solidarity gymkhana, as everything raised was for the benefit of Mijas Felina. The departments for Environment and Animal Welfare, with the collaboration of other municipal departments, and the Youth Association in La Cala organised this solidarity initiative which was attended by 33 people, in addition, another 20 participated as ‘Dorsal 0’, that means, making a donation but not taking part in the activity.
The activity was carried out in teams: "All the groups were given a map with different locations. In each location they are going to find envelopes with words and, after completing the route, they have to make a sentence. The first group to complete the sentence will be the winner", said the president of La Cala Youth Association, Paula Moreno, who said that the group was founded 14 years ago but, after a period of inactivity, in January, they registered as an association at the Town Hall. "I really like having this type of activities, both for adults and children", said one of the participants, Regina Flores, who was ready to look for the envelopes with her daughter.
The treasure hunt took place at the Sendero del Alcornocal de la Roza del Aguado, one of the last remaining areas of protected forest in Mijas and one of the most importants on the Costa del Sol. It has 14 hectares and a circular route of 1.4 kilometres. "This cork oak forest is one of the wonders in Mijas, I encourage all residents to come and see it", said the councillor for Environment and Animal Welfare, Marco Cortés (PP). "It has a lot of trees and a lot of nature. I feel relaxed here because I don't smell the smoke from cars", said the young Carmen Mar Zamarra, another participant.
El Alcornocal de la Roza del Aguado is a site under the care of Espacio Drang, who gave a cork oak tree to each team, so they will look after it in their homes for a year. The aim is that the groups and the Department for Environment could plant the trees next year. "Espacio Drang does a remarkable job. They come every afternoon, Saturdays included, with many Mijeños and even children from other municipalities, so many that there is no space for more children to participate in these beautiful outdoor activities", explained the councillor in charge of the area.
Care
For its part, Mijas Felina was grateful for this gesture of solidarity towards them, as "now it is litter time. All the mums are having their babies and we need the mum to eat very well and for the kittens to eat on their own, so then they are put up for adoption", said the spokesperson for Mijas Felina, Ana Belén Rojo, who explained that all the cats in the association are neutered before they are released back into the wild or put up for adoption. The funds raised, five euros per registration, are used for this purpose, to pay for veterinary expenses and for emergency interventions for sick cats or cats that have been run over. Sometimes the members are the ones who advance these payments, which are later paid back to them by Mijas Felina.
