The association Soroptimist International Costa del Sol held last Friday 19th of April a charity dinner to raise funds. About 50 people gathered in a well known restaurant in Mijas Costa, Benavra, to share a festive evening with the aim to continue working on their different solidarity projects.  In the near future, the association will hold an international meeting which they are already preparing. 

Any event is a good occasion to demonstrate solidarity. The arrival of spring brought the Soroptimist association together again. According to Daphne Theunissen, president of the association, "we have decided to do smaller events. There are about 50 of us here. It is nice because there are people from many countries, there is a group of English people, a group of Spaniards, a group of members, groups we work with, etc. It is important that other people start to get to know us, who we are and what we do, because we need more members, there is still a lot of work to do. 

 

The aim of this party was to raise funds for the different projects of the association. According to the president, "we have several projects. We are working to help victims of gender violence. We help them to stay in a hostel when they can't go back home. We also offer psychological support to women who have already come out of it. In addition, we are working with the Food Bank, with the Red Cross, and with the association Nueva Cultura del Desarrollo. We also help with education. We are collaborating with students from the University of Malaga". 

During the event, there were several raffles and tombolas, and the most original spring hat was given a prize.

 

Soroptimist has many plans for this year. They will shortly be announcing their next international project, to which they have invited members from other parts of the country, as well as federation representatives from Holland and Belgium. The event was attended by members of Soroptimist, representatives for the Department of Foreigners in Mijas, as well as some of the beneficiaries of their work. Soroptimist's members are involved to the maximum as well as their volunteers, and their main objective is to create a better society. This is the case of Soledad Riveros, one of the volunteers, who recalled that "this dinner is just an event. But, really, what we do every day is to contribute with projects, giving our time, our energy, our knowledge in order to make this a better society".
