Aquavega claims to carry out a "detailed" monitoring of the water they supply

  • Acosol points out that the problem doesn't come from their network, "the water deliver to Aquavega meets all the quality parameters"
  • La oficina de Aquavega se ubica junto a la autovía A7, a la altura de El Chaparral.

After the Junta declared the Chaparral water unfit for consumption, the company announced that they will offer mineral water to those residents who need it

After learning that the Health Ministry of the Junta de Andalucía declared on Thursday that the water that reaches the area of El Chaparral, where some 5,000 people live, was "unfit for consumption", those responsible for Aquavega, the company that supplies water in this area, said on Friday that they had " found out through the press about this indication, because so far (12 noon) we have not received any notification from the Health Ministry informing us that the levels of trihalomethane are above normal", affirmed one of the administrators, Alfonso Werner.

However, the company committed to carry out monitoring of the water they supply, "as established in the protocol, and as we have always done", said Leopoldo Casanova, also administrator in Aquavega, adding that "these controls are carried out every three days, and the water is declared fit for use when the levels are normalised on three consecutive occasions".

Regarding the levels of trihalomethane in the water, Werner acknowledged that "in all the analysis the levels have shot up and, although we may suspect where this compound comes from, we are not sure of its origin... We understand that it is not a problem of dumping, we think it may be due to the level of organic matter in the water we receive and which we then chlorinate from here". In this respect, Casanova clarified that "what is certain is that we do not add this compound to the water under any circumstances. Our water comes 100% from Acosol".

Aquavega explained that an inspector from the Ministry of Health warned the company in mid-March that problems of this type were being detected in other parts of the Costa del Sol, not only in the area of El Chaparral, and that it was necessary to increase controls of trihalomethanes, used in chlorine water treatment, "and since then we have been carrying out detailed analyses in all our networks, in the pumping station and in the connection with the Acosol pipeline", Casanova informed.

As a preventive solution, Aquavega also announced that they will offer mineral water to all residents who need it, "we will have it here in the office for those subscribers who can travel, and for those who can't we'll deliver it to their homes if necessary", concluded Casanova.

Aquavega is a family business that has been serving El Chaparral since the late 1960s, managing some 3,000 water meters in the area.

Acosol's impressions

In allusions, the public company Acosol also argued on Friday "that the water they sell and deliver to the company Aquavega meets all the quality parameters and, once delivered, the company is responsible for maintaining and distributing the supply". Acosol representatives also pointed out that "this problem has not occurred in other points of the Acosol network, only in this one managed by Aquavega”.
