The Health and Consumption Department of the Junta de Andalucía, through the Directorate for Public Health and the Malaga Regional Office, has declared unfit for consumption the water in the supply area in El Chaparral, where some 5,000 people live.
The resolution, signed on Thursday, reports the presence of higher values of trihalomethanes, therefore Aquavega S.L., the company responsible for this water supply area, has been informed of the need to implement corrective measures in order to restore the altered parameters.
In the meantime, the company, according to the Health Department, must inform the public that the water is not suitable for consumption or for the preparation of food. However, it may be used for personal hygiene and home cleaning.
Aquavega, in addition, "must provide an alternative supply to the population affected by this declaration", explained the Junta in a statement, adding that "in the event that they opt for supply by mobile tanks, they must request the corresponding authorisation from the regional office [of the Junta] in accordance with the provisions of article 19 of Decree 70/2009, of March 31st, which approves the Regulation on Health Surveillance and Quality of Water for Human Consumption in Andalusia".
Corrective plan
Health informs that the criteria to remove the ban will be the submission by the company of a corrective plan that reduces the value of trihalomethanes below the established parameters, its implementation, and its analytical monitoring with a result adjusted to the standard of at least three consecutive analyses with an interval of at least 24 hours between them.
