On Sunday 9th of June the elections for the European Parliament will be held in Spain. For this reason, the Mijas Town Hall informs all citizens that the electoral roll can be consulted from Monday 22nd to 29th of April in the Town Hall and in the branch offices, as well as online on the official website of the National Statistics Institute (INE) (www.ine.es) and on the municipal website (www.mijas.es). In the event of any disagreement with the data collected, citizens may present allegations at the town hall.
In order to exercise the right to vote, it is necessary to meet a series of requirements, such as being over 18 years old and having Spanish nationality, although people from other European Union countries residing in Spain can also vote in the elections if they requested to do so before January 30th.
Postal voting
In addition, it is now possible to request a postal vote for these elections. Those interested may request, up to and including Thursday 30th of May, the certificate of their registration on the corresponding electoral roll, an essential requirement to be able to cast their vote. This can be requested on the Correos website (www.correos.es), certifying your identity in order to access via authentication and electronic signature.
It can also be requested at any post office, bearing in mind that the voter must go in person, except in the event of illness or accredited disability that prevents the voter from doing so. If you apply in person, you must prove your identity with your ID card, passport, driving licence or residence card. Correos reminds you that you can request an appointment through its app, website or virtual office to avoid waiting.
The Provincial Delegation of the Electoral Register Office will send applicants, from May 20th onwards, the necessary documentation to vote by post at the address they have indicated. The deadline for casting the vote is June 5th.
Voters abroad
Spaniards who are abroad must register as non-residents at their corresponding consulate or embassy and request the documentation to vote from abroad before May 11th. They also have until the 5th of June to cast their vote by certified mail.
There will be 720 Members of the European Parliament, 15 more than in the previous elections, held in 2019. In the case of Spain, 61 MEPs will be elected on a closed list system, meaning that the preference of candidates cannot be changed.
