The Finca Acebedo archaeological site is focusing its work during this third stage on the consolidation and restoration of the structures found in the area. The archaeological team is currently working to highlight the importance of the site. According to the coordinator of the Mijas Historical Heritage department, Desiré Piñero, "we are continuing with the work on the Phoenician necropolis. On one hand, we have already finished the excavation works and part of the research of the third year of the General Research Project. Thanks to this work, we have become aware of the uniqueness of the necropolis through the objects that have been found, such as the ones that are part of the grave goods of the deceased or even the objects that accompany the ritual offering".

The archaeological team continues working on the research and excavation phase, a task they combine with the maintenance, conservation and cataloguing of the elements found, as well as the different structures that have been discovered, with which we continue to explore part of the history of the municipality. According to Piñero, " we are not only working on the excavation, but we are also carrying out consolidation and restoration work on the whole structure, which is very important for its conservation over time".

The councillor for Historical Heritage, Lourdes Burgos (PP), visited the area this morning and recalled that "we have archaeological remains that are really important. We have professionals who are restoring, consolidating and discovering them. But above all, what they are doing is displaying them to the outside world so that everyone can get to know our history".

Burgos recalled that "we have found many pieces over the years and they are properly protected, catalogued and restored. They can be seen in the Historical Archive, with guided tours because it is important that we know the history behind each stone".

Phases of the research project

In the first of the six phases of the research project at the Cortijo de Acebedo site in Mijas, a pottery with six ovens and a Roman baths were discovered; and in the second phase, the research team discovered several tombs from the Phoenician period (7th and 6th centuries BC); finally, in this phase, they are focusing on restoration and conservation.

Guided tours

One of the bases of the project are the scheduled visits to the site by the City Council for students and groups in order to raise awareness of the site and its surroundings, as well as the dissemination of everything found in the Municipal Historical Archive. The visits take place in small groups on the third Thursday of each month, from 11:00 to 12:30. Those interested in attending these guided tours should send a request to archivo@mijas.es with their personal details or call 952 48 59 00 (Ext. 3501 / 3502).
