Last Friday, 5th of April, we got to know a little bit more about the Bulgarian culture, thanks to the Streya Association, which offered a show of traditional dance and singing, all this coinciding with the visit to Mijas of the mayor of Sozopol, Tihomir Yanakiev, and his deputy mayor, Andrey Nikolov. The event took place in the Branch Office of La Cala and also had the participation of the dance groups from the Popular University.

According to the mayor of Sozopol, Mijas is a municipality "that shares many similarities and energies with Bulgarian people, so we are very happy and proud to present our culture here". Also Petya Kirilova, member of the Bulgarian-Spanish Streya Centre, underlined that "Sozopol is a city by the Black Sea with centuries of history just like Mijas, and with a charming old town declared World Heritage Site by Unesco, which enchants everyone who visits it".

The Streya centre works with the aim of promoting Bulgarian folklore, building friendships between the people from Malaga and this European country. They have already done so with Periana, with whom they have been twinned since 2022, and now they have set their interest in Mijas, hence the meeting organised last Friday in La Cala. "Today, we have had the opportunity to exchange views and traditions, to learn about the Bulgarian culture and also for them to learn about ours, with the help of several dance groups from the Popular University, led by teachers Victor Rojas and Felisa Gabriel", said the councillor responsible for this department, Melisa Ceballos (PP), also present at the event.

Likewise, the councillor recalled that on May 16th and 17th, "it will be the groups of the UP of La Cala who will travel to Sozopol to show the most representative dances of our region". It will be an international festival dedicated to Andalusia which, according to Antonio Pérez, manager of the Streya group, "will allow all Bulgarian citizens to discover the Andalusian folklore, its gastronomy, its joyful character, and all this with the collaboration of some beautiful groups, among them, the ones from Mijas".
