If we look at the exact definition of what a trompe l'oeil is, a trick or illusion by which someone is deceived into seeing something that is not what it seems, this is the effect that Claire Yates' work causes at first sight. The first reaction of the public is to think that 'Wild and Wonderful', the exhibition that can be enjoyed until 30th of April in the Tourist Office of Mijas Pueblo, is a collection of 12 brilliant photographs of animals in their natural habitat. But when they approach to appreciate them in detail, they are surprised to see that what appears to be a photograph is really a painting made with a brush.
Yates' technique is exquisite, refined over the years, but it is undoubtedly an innate gift, which she has cultivated since as a child, since her father, who was a master of watercolour and pastel tones, has been her mentor. So, when asked how she manages to make her paintings look like photographs, she replies quite naturally with "I don't know, it's something I've been doing since I was very young" and adds that "when I paint animals, I can see the softness of the fur, also in the pastel colour, it's very vibrant. To begin with, I use pastel as a base and then I work over it with pastel pencil and everything is on Clairefontaine paper".
Born in a family of artists, her passion for drawing has been cultivated since her childhood, she studied plastic arts and graduated in Printed Textile Design in London, she was also a member of several artists' associations in her country. Now, she is exhibiting for the first time in Spain and in Mijas, where she has lived for 24 years and where "she wants to make herself known and show her work".
Mijas Town Hall, through its Culture and Tourism departments, is delighted to give visibility to this animal-loving artist. "The realism she works with is fantastic, and, above all, how she focuses on the gaze of the animals, projecting their soul and we are happy to give her these facilities, thus making them part of a cultural and tourism offer of the municipality, at the same time that we value what our neighbour does," said the Councillor for Culture, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP).
