The intense and constant rain that accompanied us during Easter Week in the province of Malaga has been the protagonist. On the Western Costa del Sol, according to Acosol data, in the last few days it has rained as much as it rains in several months, the Concepción reservoir is, for example, at 31.32 hm³, therefore exceeding 50% of its capacity, when before the start of Easter Week it was at 20 hm³. The managing director of the public water company, Matilde Mancha, explains that this flow to the reservoir has been "very positive" in terms of the needs of the 11 municipalities belonging to this region, "which are in a situation of emergency due to drought and serious shortages at the moment", adds Mancha.
According to the head of Acosol, despite the more than positive data, "we must be very prudent and we have not yet exceeded the average in this month of March, which is above 50 hm³. Being at 31 hm³ puts us in a better situation than before, of course, but it does not cancel out the measures proposed so far, such as regulating night-time pressure to a minimum in order to preserve our water reserves”.
The rain fallen in the last week has also provided important relief for the irrigation of fields and cultivated land, including municipal and private parks and gardens, as well as the refilling of aquifers and wells. However, Acosol assures that they will continue "with all the measures and improvements in infrastructure that we have achieved with the support of the Junta de Andalucía and we will continue to work in this direction so that we have better facilities today, but also thinking a lot about tomorrow, so we won't stop and we know the Junta's interests are the same".
The municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol region are facing in a coordinated manner new measures to control the effects of the prolonged drought that has been dragging on since the end of 2018. These new measures to alleviate the effects of the prolonged drought are motivated after the decision adopted by the Andalusian Drought Committee that limits the amount of water to 160 litres per inhabitant per day for the whole province of Malaga, a limitation already published in the BOJA on 27/03/24. The region of the Western Costa del Sol is in a situation of exceptional drought and severe shortage following the order of the Drought Committee of the Junta de Andalucía, published in the BOJA on 30 October.
Last month, the Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Occidental, through Acosol, planned the regulation of supplies in the region, carried out by all the local operators in their respective municipalities, which involves a reduction in night-time pressure to a minimum in order to adjust to the restrictions and alleviate consumption from the reservoir. "This is being carried out gradually and across the board in all the municipalities belonging to the Mancomunidad", Acosol points out.
