Students from IES La Cala participate in the CanSat project of the European Space Agency

  • The project consists of the construction of a device that simulates the operation of a satellite
  • Cecilia Redondo, Matías Silva, Carlos Oliver Grandosky, Carlos Ramírez y Daniel Meissnitzer son los integrantes de este grupo |

Promethea Orbis, a group of five students from the 1st year of the baccalaureate, is developing this challenge as part of the Technology and Engineering subject

CanSat. This is the name of the project launched by the European Space Agency with the aim of challenging students from all over Europe and which is currently being developed by five students from the first year of baccalaureate at IES La Cala in the subject Technology and Engineering. Matías Silva, Carlos Ramírez, Carlos Oliver Grandosky, Cecilia Redondo and Daniel Meissnitzer are the members of this self-named group, Promethea Orbis, who are facing the challenge with which they will have to carry out two missions: the primary one, which consists of the construction and launch of a mini-satellite the size of a can of soda, and the secondary one, of free choice but with scientific value.

As Silva explained, "the primary mission, i.e. the compulsory one, basically consists of taking data from the parts of the device itself in order to be able to carry out the secondary mission of the device, and based on that to be able to continue with the project". His colleague Carlos Ramírez said that "we have been working on this project since the beginning of the school year, since our teacher Alberto Bermúdez assigned it to us". Promethea Orbis is working on this project in class, where they have also had to create the name, design the logo, make the prototype of the satellite, the parachute, the antenna, take care of the inner mechanics and the programming of the design. Oliver added that "the teacher told us that the school was participating in this type of projects, we were very excited and told him that we wanted to take part in it, so he explained that, little by little, we would be acquiring the necessary knowledge so that in the middle of the school year we could start with the project itself". This initiative motivated these young people: "I had never been offered a project like this before and the truth is that it made us very curious because it is something unusual that is not often done at school", said the only girl in the group, Cecilia Redondo.

Once they have everything ready, these students will go to the regional competition where they will present their project and if they qualify, they will be pitted against other institutes on a national or even European level. "The most important thing is that each member of the group can learn what CanSat entails because we all have our place in the project", Meissnitzer concluded.
