Once the unspent surplus of the 2023 budget is released, the Mijas Town Hall government team will propose an increase of 53,476,158.95 euros in its annual accounts at the ordinary plenary session on the 3rd April.
The 2024 budget was initially approved last December for an amount of more than 130 million euros, which meant an increase of more than 16%. Providing the municipality with annual accounts was, explains the Executive in a statement, "one of the priorities of the government team chaired by Ana Mata", after the previous one "had the 2022 accounts extended". "When we came to government, one of our objectives was to approve the budget in time and form, as we could not continue with accounts that had been carried over and did not respond to the real needs of Mijas. Now, we are incorporating the surplus, which will allow us to improve services and move forward with projects that are essential for the future", explained the mayoress.
This is why, after the release of the surplus committed and not executed, the government team considers "this extension to be very necessary to be able to carry out works and projects that are essential for the municipality".
Infrastructures and Works
The area of Infrastructures and Works that will receive the most significant increase. A total of 44,693,798.60 euros will be approved in the next session, of which 7,685,808.13 euros correspond to the incorporation of remaining surplus funds and 37,085,422.47 euros to credit supplement.
Thanks to this, explains the Executive "Mijas will witness the implementation of projects as relevant and essential as the remodelling of the Islas Marianas roundabout (500,000 euros), the improvement of the layout of the road to La Alquería, known as Curva del Pájaro (300,000 euros) or the project to widen the A-387 between the AP-7 and the boulevard of La Loma (300,000 euros), essential initiatives to improve the internal mobility of the municipality".
Car parks
The Town Hall affirms that the provision of a larger number of parking spaces in the municipality "has always been very present in the agenda of the local Executive and this is demonstrated by this budget increase. Good examples of this are the car parks at Andalucía Park, Doña Ermita and Barrio Santana".
In the case of the Andalucía Park car park, 130,000 euros are allocated for the drafting of a new project in which the existing trees would be maintained and which, therefore, would meet the neighbourhood's request made to the previous government team. For the Doña Ermita car park, 120,000 euros have been assigned, corresponding to the drafting of a project that proposes to carry it out in an area located in front of the Indira Gandhi Primary School. And finally, 130,000 euros are also earmarked for the drafting of the project for a new car park in Barrio Santana, an action that Ana Mata's government team "had already expressed its desire to carry out on multiple occasions", according to municipal sources.
In addition, 300,000 euros will be used to improve the access to the Ermita (at the entrance to Mijas Pueblo, across from the BP), an amount that will allow the project to be drafted and started at the end of this year. "These are infrastructures and facilities that are essential to make Mijas a more comfortable town for the citizens. And, of course, as part of our line of work and commitment, we incorporate the proposals made by the residents", said the councillor for the Treasury, Mario Bravo (PP).
Drive for sports facilities
According to the local government, one of the fundamental premises of Ana Mata's government is the improvement and implementation of new sports facilities to make Mijas "a national and international reference".
For this reason, explains the Executive, this budget extension includes 200,000 euros for the drafting of the comprehensive remodelling project of the Sports City of Las Lagunas, as well as 45,000 euros for the expansion and remodelling of the football field of La Cala or 120,000 euros for the future sports complex in this urban centre, in the area of Cortijo Colorado. Also 60,000 euros are allocated for the projects of the roofs in sports areas of educational centres to respond to the requests of the educational community.
With regard to the new municipal facilities in the area of Cortijo Don Elías (Las Lagunas), progress was made when the annual budget was approved. In fact, these infrastructures include administrative, leisure and commercial use spaces, for which 100,000 euros have been allocated for the tendering and beginning of construction by the end of this year.
Other actions stipulated in this budget amendment are improvements to the cemetery mortuary (70,000 euros), the adaptation of the facade and access to the Municipal Theatre Manuel España (60,000 euros) and the drafting of the project for the remodelling of the auditorium in Mijas Pueblo (120,000 euros).
Committed funds
To all this, the Executive explains that we must add a series of works and infrastructures that were "pending execution by the previous municipal government" and which require items amounting to 30,163,688.73 euros, corresponding to the parking of Los Santos (10,136,000 euros), Ahogadero Park (17,427,688.73 euros), the swimming pool of La Cala (800,000 euros) and the multipurpose building with therapeutic pool (1,800,000 euros).
Festivities and Traditions
On the other hand, the delegation of Festivities and Traditions is another of the areas that has requested an increase in its budget. This extension amounts to 2,120,654.71 euros, of which 1,118,814.90 euros correspond to the credit extension and the remaining amount to the incorporation of residual funds.
Thanks to this, the area will be able to contract artists for the fairs of La Cala and Mijas Pueblo (466,152.50 euros) or to execute a sentence related to the SGAE and which establishes the payment to the organisation of 29,133.45 euros pending payment by the previous government team.
For the Executive "this approach to expanding the budget continues the path established by the government team of Ana Mata in demonstrating its commitment to the citizens, providing and strengthening some fundamental annual accounts for the growth and development of Mijas and to be carried out in an organised and orderly manner". Thanks to these accounts, says the mayoress, "all residents will have evidence of what their taxes are used for, which is the continuous improvement of all the Mijas areas".
