For three days we will have the opportunity to get to know the work carried out by the artisans of Mijas. Among other handcrafted creations, there will be an exhibition of jewellery, painting, fashion, esparto grass, silverware, engravings, saddlery, varnishes, as well as stained glass and tile painting.

“In Mijas, as an enclave where we have a very high number of craftsmen and craftswomen, we have participated every year, but this time the Town Hall gives us its support and provides us with a tent to publicise and promote local crafts”, explained the president of the Mijas Crafts Association, Sonia Lekuona, on Monday 25th at the presentation of the initiative at the Tourist Office. For his part, the councillor for Culture, Commerce and Tourism Promotion, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP), said that “in Mijas this day takes on special importance because of the importance of the association, what it does and, above all, the commercial and cultural expression that it represents”. 

The councillor stressed that this “is the only craft association that has remained in Malaga, therefore, shows that the interest in crafts in Mijas is quite high and the administration has to work with them, therefore, makes this space available to them, this tent, on the 4th, 5th and 6th of April”. The Mijas Handicraft Association already has more than thirty members from more than 20 different trades. “There are 33 of us and we now cover the whole province and let’s say that a third of us come from outside Mijas,” Lekuona pointed out. “We have to take advantage of the window we have to the world with tourism to preserve this tradition through craftsmanship. They are trades from esparto grass, leather or stained glass, which tend to be lost and what we have to try to do is to maintain it and even give it more visibility, both in La Cala, in the boulevard market, and here in the village,” said the councillor for Tourism, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson (Vox). 

European Artisan Days

From 10 to 14 hours, in the marquee set up on the Virgen de la Peña Square (Mijas Pueblo), the craftsmen and craftswomen will explain what their trades consist of and will give demonstrations in situ. “We also invite schools to come along, because all the exhibitions are free of charge and the pupils will be able to see how handicrafts are made in Mijas”, concluded Lekuona. In this initiative, Liana Popa (jewellery and leather goods), Morena Villa (jewellery and leather), José Angulo (tile painting), María José Calvente (flamenco fashion), Sonia Lekuona (esparto work), María Ángeles Hernández (silver work) and Humildad Ríos (varnishes and varnishes) will explain and offer their products for sale, Humildad Ríos (varnishes), María Teresa Madueño (engraving and printing), Cristóbal Angulo (gold and silver work), Lourdes Días (saddlery), Jonatan Días (stained glass), Laura Benavides (polymer clay jewellery) and María Jurado (silk eco-painting).
