This morning, the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), chaired the coordination meeting with the municipal departments and areas involved in the security and correct development of Easter Week in the municipality. Local Police, Civil Protection, Fire Brigade, Civil Guard, as well as the areas of Security, Operational Services, Mobility, Cleaning and Festivities have been present at this meeting to finalize the definition of the special device that will be deployed in the municipality during Easter Week.
There will be almost 200 members of staff employed to ensure the smooth running of the Holy Week, including 150 local police officers, tripling their usual presence, as well as around twenty Civil Protection volunteers who will be deployed along the various routes and points of interest.
As a novelty, it should be noted that for the first time there will be a fire brigade present, which will have a team of between 10 and 12 officers, mainly distributed between Mijas Pueblo and La Cala, as Las Lagunas is where their operations centre is located and, in the event of having to act in this area, the response would be quicker.
As the Mijas mayoress pointed out, "the coordination and collaboration of all the parties involved is logical and very necessary for the correct development and in the best circumstances not only of the processions but also to guarantee the safety of the many visitors who come to our municipality during these days".
In this sense, she wanted to remember that the latest data provided a few days ago by the Association of Hotel Businesses of the Costa del Sol (Aehcos) pointed out that Mijas would close the month of March with an average occupancy rate of over 83%, making it one of the municipalities in the province of Malaga with a higher occupancy rate and in which Easter plays a fundamental role.
For his part, the councillor for Security, Juan Carlos Cuevas (Vox), appealed to the public to collaborate with the different members and security forces to ensure that these important days go as smoothly as possible: "It is important that the public collaborate with the work of all the security teams whose aim is to ensure their safety without detriment to the enjoyment of this deep-rooted tradition", he said.
Shuttle bus
The mayoress also wanted to encourage residents and visitors to use public transport during Easter Week. In this regard, she announced that there will be a shuttle bus in Mijas Pueblo operating from Friday 22nd of March until Easter Sunday with an uninterrupted timetable from 11am to 1am, departing from the Cantera del Puerto. The aim is to avoid traffic and parking problems and to make it easier for all visitors to get into the village. In addition, the frequency of buses from Fuengirola will also be increased.
Cleaning and Operational Services
These two municipal areas, according to the local government, "have been working intensively in the days leading up to Easter Week to clean up the different routes along which the processions pass through the three urban centres". Thus, according to the report, the necessary actions have been carried out to remove all the street fixtures and fittings that impede the passage of the thrones, as well as an exhaustive review of the street lighting and the clearing of the streets.
With regard to cleaning during the days of Easter Week, there will be four operators per procession in each of the urban centres, who will be in charge of the open-box vehicle (two operators), the pressure washer and the application of the specific product to prevent the wax from adhering.
Beaches
On the other hand, the mayoress explained that the entire coastline is already prepared for the start of the 'Semana de Pasión', including the El Bombo beach, which suffered a great loss of sand during the last west windstorm. In fact, at this point of the coast, the municipal workers have distributed 30,000 cubic metres of sand to eliminate the two-metre step that appeared as a result of the strong winds and currents and to completely regenerate the beach.
