The Peña Flamenca del Sur held, on Saturday, the second session of the Flamenco Torreón del Cante contest, in its XVI edition. The contest began on March 9th and the final will be celebrated in June.

"In this second session we have listened to two veteran ‘cantaores’, Francisco Cortés and Juan Gilabert, who brought great enthusiasm and excitement, accompanied by Francisco Palma on guitar", said the vice-president of the Peña Flamenca del Sur, José Martín Navas.

Malagueñas, alegrías, cantes de levante and much more was performed on Saturday by these two masters of flamenco. "I've been doing this for many years, I've been singing since I was a little boy and when I was  20 I started to compete, I've been singing all over Spain", explained Francisco Cortés Ruiz. For his part, Juan Gilabert also started in music when he was a child and has been a teacher for 42 years. "I was one of the first to introduce flamenco at school, my father sang very well, it runs in my family. For me flamenco is practically my life", he said.

It was a night full of music and passion, but there were also some complications. Juan Gilabert confessed "I'm not ready to sing", as he was suffering from bronchitis, which prevented him from ‘giving his 100%’. Despite his situation, the artist went on stage and made the audience enjoy the show. "It's a very nice 'peña', they've given me all the help in the world, I'm going to perform because I've already committed myself, but today they won't give me a score, they'll give me an appointment for another session", said the artist.

The next session of the contest will be on Saturday 23rd of March and three other ‘cantaores’ will take the stage to demonstrate their talent.
