This Friday, 8th of March, at 18:00 hours, the Municipal Theatre Manuel España will host the XVI edition of the 'Gala Mijas en Femenino'. On this occasion, as the mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), pointed out, the honorees will be Anne Bowles, Marta Ortega, Remedios Fernández, Berni Gabriel, Rafi Cuevas and Celia Salguero.
These are women who the Town Hall describes as "indispensable" for Mijas because, she explains, "they carry out outstanding social work, carrying out tasks that help to promote culture, sport, traditions and helping people in vulnerable situations". Anne Bowles, founder of the diabetes group of the La Cala Lions Club, has been chosen for her more than twenty years raising awareness about this disease, which can be fatal.
Marta Ortega is the captain of the Unicaja Mijas Basketball Club and the "heart of the team", according to the Town Hall. In addition, as the mayoress pointed out, she is a young woman "who is an example of effort and self-improvement, values that are intrinsic to the practice of sport".
In turn, UP (Open University) teachers Remedios Fernández, Berni Gabriel and Rafi Cuevas will be honoured for their educational work and for their promotion in preserving culture and traditions through dance, something they have already shown to several generations.
Finally, Celia Salguero, another award winner, has a long career in the field of volunteering, participating in programmes such as accompanying the elderly in the fight against loneliness.
At the same event, the mayoress, who is in charge of the Department of Family and Equal Opportunities, will read the manifesto. "It is the main event of the 'Mujeres sin +' programme, which we are developing on the occasion of International Women's Day. In addition, it is full of meaning, so I encourage all neighbours to join us to pay tribute to these six great women", said Mata.
Students from the electric guitar class at the UP Las Lagunas will perform at the beginning of the gala. Javier Herraiz, teacher, Roberto González and Antonio Cuesta, on guitar, will perform with singer Paola Nieto.
Transportation service
The Town Hall will provide the residents of La Cala and Mijas Pueblo with two free buses so that they can attend the awards ceremony. They will leave at 17:15 hours from the Mijas Town Hall and La Cala Branch Offices, respectively.
