The neighbours of La Loma de Mijas had a big scare this Thursday when a fire broke out at midday in one of the storage warehouses in the area and caused a large column of black smoke, visible from practically the whole municipality. It was shortly before 12:30 when the employees of one of the three storage areas, into which the warehouse affected by the fire was divided, raised the alarm with the emergency services. This was confirmed by the head of Marketing at Zoco Home, Alberto García, who stated that "one of the eight employees of the warehouse team who was working at the time started to call the authorities, always safeguarding our entire team, who, fortunately, were able to get out in time; we are all safe". 

Firefighters from the Mijas Fire Brigade, Local Police, Guardia Civil, 061 and Operational Services quickly arrived at the scene, at La Loma de Mijas. "On arrival, we found the fire fully developed having collapsed one of the warehouses; fortunately, there were no people inside, so we have dedicated our efforts to prevent the fire from spreading to other warehouses and to nearby homes", said the head of the Mijas Fire Department, Francisco Manuel Mérida.

The fire was alarming because of the dimension of the column of black smoke it caused. "There was combustion of products, which is what caused the column of toxic black smoke, and as a precaution all the houses around the perimeter of the fire have been evacuated and 061 has also been called, which fortunately has not had to intervene, have we have not had to regret any personal injury", said the chief intendant of the Local Police of Mijas, Juan Manuel Rosas.

The fire was soon reinforced with the collaboration of other fire brigades from Fuengirola and Benalmádena, who deployed their two ladder vehicles. At around two o'clock in the afternoon, the fire was considered to be under control. " Very often we all three municipalities have to support each other. Mijas, Fuengirola and Benalmádena work together", added Mérida.

The Mijas Town Hall is grateful for the quick response of the fire fighters and the collaboration of other municipal departments in the work to extinguish the fire. Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson (Vox), Mijas Town Hall councillor for Security, said: "Of course, we have to thank the Operational Services, who are always there with their fire trucks, and the firefighters from Fuengirola and Benalmádena, who, thanks to their large ladders, helped us to put out the fire".

The fire originated in one of the three storage areas of the warehouse near the Carretera de Mijas. The specialists are already working to find out the causes of the fire, which was declared extinguished at 18:00 hours.
