The Mijas Town Hall, through its Mobility Department, has launched a new edition of the road safety education programme for the municipality's schoolchildren. In total, almost 1,200 children in sixth year primary from the thirteen schools in Mijas, as well as the Entrerríos rural school, will receive basic training on road signs and traffic regulations.

As explained by the councillor in charge, Marco Cortés (PP), both theoretical and practical training will be offered so that they are familiar with everything related to the safety of pedestrians and vehicles, as well as the basic traffic rules. "From an early age they should know what the signs mean and the obligations they entail, because only by learning what they represent, they will know what to do at any given moment. So going on the road will be safer for them", said the councillor.

The first centre to attend this training was CEIP Campanales, which will be followed periodically by the rest of the schools in Mijas. The students participated this Tuesday in a theoretical class that lasted half an hour and then moved on to the road safety park located in Calle Geranio.

At this point, as the councillor pointed out, there is a circuit with all kinds of horizontal and vertical signage, as well as roundabouts that simulate a public road, so that students, using bicycles, make a very realistic route.

"I already knew some signs and rules, not all of them, but here I am learning them", said Hugo Pérez, student at CEIP Campanales.  "It's very cool, the practice is easier because the signs are in place and you can see what's around you", said Vanesa Paula Sineavschi, another student.

Collaboration from other municipal areas

The municipal programme has the support of the Local Police, Civil Protection and the Gloria Fuertes nursery school, which has lent a classroom for the theoretical part of the training. Also the councils for Operational Services and Parks and Gardens are carrying out improvements in this park to ensure the safety of children, as stated by the councillor responsible for these areas, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), who said that "repairs are going to be made to the perimeter railing because there are several sections which are damaged and loose; we are also waiting for it to rain to put the vertical garden back into use, making it beautiful, giving a touch of colour to this park".
