The Councillor for Public Facilities Management of the Mijas Town Hall, Juan José Torres Trella (PP), announced this Tuesday that the panoramic lifts located in Mijas Pueblo, which were out of service, are once again operational. One of them is located on the Virgen de la Peña square and was installed eight years ago although, throughout this time, it has suffered numerous problems. Now, after the relevant repairs to the enclosure, the system is once again available to users.
In this regard, the councillor explained that this lift is located on the outskirts of the square, reaching the upper part of El Compás avenue. However, since its opening it has suffered problems, to such an extent that in summer last year thirteen tourists were trapped inside due to excess load. "It should be remembered that the lift was designed without air conditioning, despite being outside, which caused problems that were solved by the contractor. However, the heat has caused up to six breakdowns over the years, affecting the electronics of the installation", explained Torres Trella.
Given the situation, it was necessary to carry out a project to provide air-conditioning for both this lift and the one located next to the Virgen de la Peña car park, although, despite these modifications, breakdowns were again detected.
In June last year, the councillor added, thirteen tourists were trapped inside, forcing the outer enclosure to be forced open. Since then, the lift has been out of service. "The previous government team did not carry out any intervention to get it working again and it was not until this November that we got down to work to fix it", said the municipal official.
Finally, "to reduce the time and get the system back up and running as soon as possible", the councillor pointed out, "we have opted for municipal operators to fix the enclosure. Sandwich plasterboard panels of the same type as the existing ones have been installed, an option validated by the Authorised Control Body (OCA). This is the solution adopted for the other panoramic lift, the one in the car park, which was also out of order".
The lifts, concludes the councillor, "are already in operation and have passed the appropriate inspections. This is not only a new tourist attraction, but also greatly improves accessibility to the town. Now, we all have a responsibility to maintain and respect it".
