Last weekend's coastal phenomena washed away large amounts of sand in the area of El Bombo and damage to the beach accesses in Calahonda

The storm that hit the province last weekend, although it did not cause major damage to the coast of Mijas, has especially punished two areas. In the El Bombo beach the waves have caused a considerable loss of sand, creating a slope, while the accesses to the coast in Calahonda have also suffered damage. "Since Monday we have been working on it, to have the beaches in the best possible condition and ready for when the high season arrives", explained the councillor for Beaches, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), during a visit to the area today.

In the area of El Bombo a team of 15 employees of Basic Income is currently working to remove all the debris left by the storm, such as reeds and seaweed, in addition to the use of a municipal tractor, "which goes from the river, from the part of La Cala towards El Bombo, to try to alleviate the slope that the waves have created on the beach. It has left quite a big cut where we will have to add sand", added Gómez Teruel. Between the staff of the Beaches Department and Basic Income, the team is made up of more than 40 workers, a tractor and several buggies that are responsible for the cleaning and maintenance of the 12 kilometres of beaches.

Although the work on the beaches of Mijas is constant, almost daily, it is during these months when efforts are intensified for two reasons, on the one hand, to remedy the damage caused by winter storms and, secondly, to prepare the coastline for the spring and summer seasons. "We have made a provision for the entire coastline, the workers have been spread out more to cover more parts of the beaches and to be able to provide a better service to both the urbanisations and La Cala and to the area bordering Fuengirola, where cleaning work is also being carried out", said the beach councillor, who concluded by recalling that "the aim is that by Easter the beaches are in the best possible condition, which is why we are tackling the problems immediately. Although the storm has not been very destructive, we want to mitigate the damage and keep them in the best possible condition, so that if another storm should arrive, we don't have to suffer any more damage than we have already sustained".
