As usual, and in Mijas it could not be less, the Royal British Legions' meeting began this Thursday morning with a solemn and simple act in which two minutes of silence were kept, one for the dead and the other for the wounded in war. Representatives from all the districts of the NGO in Spain gathered today at Club La Naranja in Calahonda to celebrate this meeting in which, among other matters, they discussed the approval of last year's accounts, the presentation of the next financial year and, especially, the organisation of the Poppy Appeal, the official day of the British Legion, which is commemorated on the 11th of November. The organisation was born at the beginning of the 19th century with a clear objective: "We are here to help old or seriously wounded soldiers, or those with mental health problems, we are here to help them", explained the president of the Southern District of Spain of this institution, Neal Toplis.
The councillor for Foreigners of the Mijas Town Hall, Mario Bravo (PP), who accompanied the members of the NGO on this day of coexistence, stressed that "it has been a source of pride for Mijas that they have chosen our town for this national convention". The councillor also highlighted the work carried out by the British Legion volunteers, who in Andalusia have one thousand, "this association was created after the end of the First World War, it is celebrated on the 11th of November, when the war ends and they are dedicated to caring for all those who suffered during the conflict". Bravo added that "it is not only a matter of money, which is important, but also many of these people have psychological problems because they have lived and seen things that the rest of us have not suffered, so these people need help and the British Legion provides it, they do very good work and we are very proud of them".
In Mijas, on the 11th of November, the volunteers of the Royal British Legion will once again take to the streets to raise funds on the occasion of their Poppy Appeal Day, in order to continue to help the victims that, unfortunately, centuries after centuries of war continue to leave behind.
