Manuel España has taken the name of Mijas all over the world through his theatrical productions

The Mijas Town Hall, at the proposal of the Department for Culture, will suggest that the 'Teatro Las Lagunas' be renamed 'Teatro Manuel España' during the plenary session on January 31st

With this proposal, the local executive proposes a public recognition, in life, to this local artist whose social work and contribution to the art and culture of Mijas are undeniable.

Proof of this is that, throughout the almost forty years that he has been at the head of the Cultural Association 'Teatro Mijas', "his work has transcended the limits of the municipality, taking the name of Mijas throughout the national territory and outside Spain with the theatrical performances of which he has been the architect. Manuel España has played a fundamental role in the social integration of people of all ages and conditions", said the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata, during her appearance.

For the proposal to change the name of the Teatro Las Lagunas, the involvement and his vocational dedication to this municipal cultural space has also been taken into consideration, "turning the theatre into a lifeline for many people", as stated in the proposal promoted by the Department of Culture.

It should be remembered that Manuel España collaborates very closely with the 'Universidad Popular' (Open University), where he has imparted different workshops in which almost 1,000 students have attended.

In this regard, the councillor for the department, Juan Carlos Maldonado, stressed "the human quality of Manuel España, a person who has left and continues to leave his mark on our community and without whose work the 'Teatro Las Lagunas' would not be the same".

For the local executive, this initiative is a gesture that does justice to this local artist who, throughout his extensive and fruitful professional career - has written over 200 plays and has always carried the name of Mijas all over the world. In fact, the first quarter programme of the municipal theatre kicked off on January 20th with "Yerma", a play by Federico García Lorca adapted in an exceptional manner by Manuel España himself.
