Mijas increases the collection of urban waste and recycling in the year 2023

  • The increase is due to a rise in the number of tourists, residential and floating population
  • El concejal de Limpieza Viaria, Eloy Belmonte (dcha.).

The Environmental Complex of the Costa del Sol received 0.5% more waste than in 2022, when 361,558 tonnes were collected

In 2023, Mijas was the town in the 'Mancomunidad' (Association of Municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol) that experienced the greatest increase in urban waste collection, with 7% more than in 2022, rising from 43,862 tonnes at that time to 46,883 tonnes last year.

This was made clear by the supra-municipal entity in a press release in which it also indicated that the collection and treatment of waste on the Costa del Sol increased to 363,460 tonnes in 2023, with the Environmental Complex of the Costa del Sol receiving 0.5 more waste than in 2022, when 361,558 tonnes were received from the 11 municipalities of the Costa del Sol.

The councillor for Street Cleaning, Eloy Belmonte (Vox), explained that, although Mijas is above average in terms of urban waste collection, "the increase is proportional to the increase in population; in addition, we must take into account that we have had a good tourism campaign, which also generates more waste". The president of the Mancomunidad, Manuel Cardeña, explained that despite the increase in waste "the rate of kilos of waste per inhabitant per day is decreasing". "This shows that awareness is growing. More and more waste is being recycled and we are reducing the amount going to the landfill", he said. The rate of waste generated per inhabitant per day was 1.59 kilos, lower than the previous year, when the average was 1.6 kilos. This figure, with the slight increase in the total tonnes of urban waste, shows that the population is recycling the waste it generates better, as the average amount of waste per inhabitant per day has fallen.

Light packaging

As to the collection of light packaging, the increase compared to 2022 was 5%. Therefore, 15,579 tonnes arrived at the Complex in 2023, compared to 14,899 tonnes the previous year. The average generation of this type of waste per inhabitant per year was 26 kilos. In Mijas, according to Belmonte, the collection of packaging has increased by 5% compared to 2022, from 2,258,947 kilos to 2,375,642 kilos in 2023.

Paper and cardboard

The blue container received over  10,000 tonnes from the 11 municipalities in 2023, 4% more than in 2022, when it reached 9,855 tonnes. Each inhabitant generated an average of 17 kilos per year. In Mijas, 8% more paper and cardboard has been collected than in 2022. In 2023, 1,818,987 kilos were collected compared to 1,688,510 in 2022. "We  are not the municipality with the highest increase, but we were told by Urbaser that we are among those that have increased  most in recycling, so the assessment is optimal, although we must  recycle more", added Belmonte. The councillor also pointed out that the Mijas Town Hall is not responsible for the collection of waste for recycling and that the frequency of emptying these containers depends on the company contracted by the Mancomunidad.

Glass

In 2023 a total of 16,424 tonnes were collected in the 11 municipalities of the Mancomunidad. This is 1% less than 2022, when 16,527 tonnes were obtained. The citizens generated an average of 27 kilos per inhabitant in 2023, compared to 28 kilos in 2022. In Mijas 3% less has been collected than the previous year, from 2,710,108 kilos in 2022 to 2,619,247 kilos in 2023.
