Work is now underway to build a water catchment well in La Graja, in the heart of the Sierra de Mijas, in the vicinity of Los Arenales quarry, where there is already a catchment point which has become unusable due to the passage of time. The work has been awarded to the company Perforaciones Romera for 205,153 euros and has a completion period of three months. The public water company Acosol will manage the execution of the work.
The new catchment well, from which water is to be extracted to help supply the municipality, is 400 metres deep and 50 centimetres wide through an electro-welded PVC/galvanised iron casing pipe. Once the piping has been completed, a rectangular-section concrete manhole will be built below ground level to house the check valves, a pressure gauge and a vent. In addition, a borehole test will be carried out to determine the actual flow rate of the catchment.
The aquifer belongs to the Hydrographic District of the Andalusian Mediterranean Basins. The Mijas Town Hall currently has a temporary authorisation to exploit a flow of 4 cubic hectometres from the groundwater abstractions in its municipal district, including this well.
