The public water company on the Costa del Sol, Acosol, renewed its Board of Directors before the end of the year 2023. In this way, 2024 begins with the 11 mayors of the Western Costa del Sol region represented in this board, after the incorporation of the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP); the mayor of Casares, Juan Luis Villalón; the mayor of Istán, José Miguel Marín; and the mayor of Ojén, Juan Merino. The session took place on December 29th 2023, which they attended as members of the council.
This body is made up of a total of 14 representatives, 11 of whom are mayors. In the case of Estepona, the town is represented by councillor Ana Velasco, and the president Manuel Cardeña, the CEO Matilde Mancha and the representative of the Acosol employees, Enrique Márquez. CEO, Matilde Mancha, has insisted that up to now there has been a permanent dialogue with all the municipalities, but has valued the importance of working together and that the main people responsible for municipal management "are protagonists and form part of this council to know, first hand, the situation of extreme drought and the actions that are being carried out, as well as future actions to address this problem".
Drought
On the agenda, Mancha gave a progress report in which she updated all the mayors on the drought situation and the measures put in place to achieve the objective of reducing drinking water consumption by 20%. In this sense, she affirmed that we are moving in the right direction, because objectives are being achieved, although she warned that the situation is still very complicated. On the other hand, she informed the councillors of the next drought decree that the Junta de Andalucía will foreseeably publish in January, due to the persistent lack of rainfall. With regard to the extension of the use of reclaimed water, she explained in detail the progress made on the roadmap for extending the authorisation for irrigation of public parks and watering by the town halls, procedures that require maximum coordination with Acosol and the Regional Government of Andalusia in order to comply with the regulatory requirements for these uses.
