It was a showcase of the work carried out during the first term of the course and a way of wishing us all a Merry Christmas. Divided into three parts, yesterday's performance by the Professional Conservatory of Music Costa del Sol at the Las Lagunas Theatre had a bit of everything.
In the first, the band performed. This ensemble, made up of wind and percussion instruments, opened with the song 'Virginia' by Jacob de Haan. It was followed by the symphony orchestra, which included all the instruments that correspond to the specialities taught at the conservatory, except for the guitar. Their repertoire included a part of a symphony by Haydn, and another piece conducted by a young double bass student, recently awarded a prize. The fact is that there are great musicians at the conservatory, "we already have several students who have gone on to become world-class concert guitarists, one of them is from Mijas, he lives very close to here, Rafael Aguirre, a world-class guitarist who started studying with us and is now a world-renowned guitarist, and there are many more", said the vice-director of the conservatory, Andrés Pino.
There were many more to come, because these young people really promise, like Hugo Moreno. He is a saxophonist, he is 17 years old and has been at the conservatory for ten years. This year he is in his 6th year of professional studies. "I've been playing it for all these years and I've had many beautiful experiences with music and thanks to this I've met many people getting this far", said the student.
María Valdés, 14 years old, is in the 3rd year of professional saxophone lessons, which she combines with piano lessons. She tells us what music brings her: "for me, a lot of peace of mind, especially when I play; it's a feeling I can't explain; I recommend it to everyone".
Choir
In the third part of the show, the choir joined the orchestra to perform two carols, 'White Christmas' and 'Carol of the bells', a moment when the stage became too small for so many great musicians. "There are almost 120 children singing with the orchestra, made up of around 100 musicians, so we had to organise ourselves above and below the stage and the sides of the theatre so that everyone could fit in", explained the choir's teacher, Irene Gómez.
Family, friends and music lovers packed the theatre yesterday. Some members of the municipal corporation also attended. Among them, the councillor for Culture of the Mijas Town Hall, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP), who said that "we are enjoying a wonderful day, so we encourage our young people to join this initiative of the conservatory, which, ultimately, is culture and tradition and a form of expression by the people". Yesterday, as we said, with their music, they wished us all a Merry Christmas.
