The Mijas Town Hall, through its Beaches and Environment departments, together with the Zurich Foundation, has promoted a series of cleaning and replanting works on the coastline of El Chaparral beach.

Specifically, work has been carried out to clear invasive plant species, planting of plant species typical to the Mijas ecosystem, removal of plastics and other waste found on the sand, as well as re-establishing the ropes on the sandbanks in the process of restoration.

The Zurich Foundation has contributed to this sustainable initiative with the involvement of agents and executives of the entity in the different cleaning tasks, as well as in the repopulation of the area with almost 200 plants.

The councillor for Beaches, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), visited the Chaparral beach together with the municipal environmental educator, Juan Luis Vega, and the agent of the insurance company located in Mijas Pueblo, Antonio Márquez. Gómez Teruel took the opportunity to thank the company for choosing the Mijas coastline for the replanting of native marine plants, explaining that "lotus, thistle and sea fennel have been chosen because they are very hardy plants that withstand the climate change that, unfortunately, we are suffering in this area of Spain". He also pointed out that these are species that are grown in the municipal nursery using cuttings or common seeds, "so we are bringing them back to their natural environment".

Márquez pointed out that "the company is looking very much at the environment, for example, for every insurance policy taken out, they plant a tree" and added that "they also carry out other actions such as social canteens, donations and food collection and that for every donation made by a customer, the Foundation doubles it".

For his part, the municipal environmental educator, Juan Luis Vega, stressed the need for the public to understand that "the restoration of ecosystems and beaches is everyone's job", adding that the "reason why this area has been chosen is because it is one of the least urban beaches and preserves strands of sand that are very interesting for the recovery of native flora".

Likewise, the Foundation adds that "our approach promotes the mobilisation of the people who work in the company towards an active commitment of dedication of time, skills or financial donations with the aim of promoting social and environmental actions, both in activities such as today's and through individual actions" and adds that "it invests in social projects in Spain in social equity, mental health, climate change and emergencies".
