La Cala's La Butibamba park was the setting chosen this year by the La Cala Lions Club to hold its traditional Christmas market which, as always, was held for charity. "All the proceeds will go to the most disadvantaged people", explained the president of the international association, Brenda Meredith.
No detail was missing from the charity market. The batukada Barakatum opened the event. On stage, the Costa Soul Singers choir sang traditional Christmas carols, and numerous stalls were set up to raise funds with Christmas decorations, food and drink, toys, gifts, clothes....
"There are a lot of interesting things for Christmas, there are plenty of people shopping and also the money raised is for charity, so this event is good", said one attendee, Ida Gasparova, who came to the market to spend the day with family and friends. In addition, "my son Maxi, 11 years old, sings imitating Elvis and we came to support him", said the woman. The Lions Club also organised an extensive musical programme for the occasion.
"We had musical performances, flamenco dancing, Christmas carols... In addition, there was a visit from Santa Claus, stalls throughout the park, raffles, a magic show and children's entertainment for the little ones. A lot of people came and I think everyone enjoyed a wonderful day", said Meredith.
"The children have had their photos taken with Father Christmas, they have been playing games and here we are enjoying the live music", said another attendee, Julia Bolla, who valued the solidarity initiative of the Lions Club of La Cala, a group formed by people who are always willing to help those who need it most.
In total, the La Cala Lions Club managed to raise 3,000 euros on Sunday 26th with the charity event. In addition, the association also took advantage of the event to present a cheque for 1,000 euros to support British ex-servicemen and their families with few resources from the Royal British Legion of Alhaurín el Grande.
