The Provincial Council will invest one million euros in improving access to Osunillas

  • Punto que, actualmente, cuenta con un cambio de rasante peligroso que dificulta la visibilidad y entraña riesgos para los usuarios.

This measure will improve road safety at the entrance to this area, which is currently hazardous

The Mijas Town Hall will receive one million euros from the Provincial Council of Malaga to finance the improvement of access to the Osunillas area, as stated in the Budgets approved by the provincial institution for the financial year 2024.

This aid is part of a plan launched by the provincial institution in 2022 for the 16 municipalities with more than 20,000 inhabitants in the province in order to promote the improvement of infrastructure and facilities in all towns in the province. The Mijas Town Hall has not yet received these funds because the project did not have all the regulatory documentation, "which has been solved with the efforts of the current government team", explains the local government in a statement.

The main objective of the work in the area of Osunillas, at the access to La Ermitica, is to improve road safety at the entrance to this district of Mijas, which currently has a dangerous change of gradient that hinders visibility and entails risks for users.

The area of action is 19,000 square metres and, as it affects the road network and a public green area, the 1999 General Urban Development Plan (PGOU) has had to be modified (an innovation) with regard to the Osunillas area. To do this, it was essential to change the ownership of the road and the environmental assessment, as there is a very degraded green area and, with this measure, a green space will be created, with autochthonous species.

Provisional approval in plenary session took place in February 2021. After receiving the strategic environmental declaration of the innovation of the PGOU from the Andalusian Regional Government, it must now be approved by the Provincial Urban Planning Coordination Commission.

Transfer of the subsidy

Once the definitive approval of the availability of this land has been granted and communicated to the Provincial Council, the provincial institution will be able to transfer the amount of the subsidy in order to proceed with the tendering of the project, which is expected to be done in the first quarter of 2024.

Thus, as reflected in the report justifying this modification, at the particular point where the work is to be carried out, there are different aspects that make the area very dangerous. Firstly, the current layout of the road has a small radius curve, which means that large vehicles have to invade the oncoming lane to be able to complete their journey, and there is also a road, La Ermitica, which connects exactly at the curve, with the consequent danger.

Access to the urbanisation

On the other hand, another element of substantial improvement to the current situation is the access to the urbanisation of Osunillas, a few metres further on in Mijas direction, which is at a change of gradient, so that visibility for vehicles travelling on the A-368 and those entering from the urbanisation is practically nil.

With this intervention, a sharp bend is eliminated where a roundabout is to be built; in this way, drivers will have a larger diameter for turning thanks to the roundabout and, what is even more important, optimum visibility, which will put an end to the current lack of safety.
