Soroptimist International Costa del Sol joins the 16 Days of Activism, initiated by UN Women in 1991. The annual campaign kicks off on November 25th, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, with the slogan 'Spot the Signs'. Through Facebook (Soroptimist International Costa del Sol) and Instagram (@sicostadelsol), a sequence of daily messages, which have been developed by the European Federation of Soroptimist International, will be published on the same day in 35 countries in Europe in different languages. The theme is the prevention of violence in couples, raising awareness about the signs of a toxic relationship, which usually end badly in the form of physical violence, "as we believe that violence should not happen in the first place and that it can be avoided by being aware of the warning signs", say the association.
March 25N
The collective will also join the march this Saturday, 25th of November, which will start at 12:00 noon from the Plaza de la Marina in the centre of Malaga. "It is so important to raise our voices and keep reminding people that inequality leads to violence against women, which needs to be monitored and dealt with in a different way to violence in general", said Daphne Theunissen, president of Soroptimist International Costa del Sol.
Soroptimist against gender-based violence
Soroptimist is part of a global organisation of more than 66,000 professional women in 122 countries committed to helping, empowering, enabling and educating women and children. Since 2008 it has been raising its voice in favour of the care of victims of gender-based violence, for which it has launched initiatives such as informative talks in English and Spanish, the development of the 'Magic Book' which consists of a protocol in the event of a case of gender-based violence (information on who to contact to receive a bag with basic supplies, money for food, hotel vouchers for women (and children) who need to leave home in a critical situation during the weekend or holidays, as well as information in several languages on how to act if you are in a violent relationship). "This project has helped women and children from different backgrounds over the last few years", said Aura Roderick, one of the members of the committee that initiated the project. "It is very important that the women know that they are not alone, that they understand the information that is being given and can be guided through the system so that they have a better chance of getting their lives back on track. It is very gratifying to be able to do this important work, it could not be possible without the help of the members of the Viogenex group".
The Viogenex working group was started at the initiative of the Foreigners Department of the Mijas Town Hall, meets on a regular basis and has led to more efficient collaboration between local authorities and organisations such as the Red Cross, La Cala Lions Club, Age Care and Soroptimist International Costa del Sol. At the meetings of this group all participants learn about the work the others are doing in order to better support women.
