The Town Hall and Provincial Council cooperate to finish the stretches of the Coastal Path

  • Of the 12 kilometres of coastal strip of Mijas, there are still about five kilometres to be executed

Mayoress Ana Mata, highlights the interest of the government team in promoting and relaunching this "strategic project for Mijas"

The Mijas Town Hall and the Provincial Council of Málaga have resumed their collaboration to develop the remaining sections of the Coastal Path in the town, specifically those that link La Cala de Mijas with Fuengirola. The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), and the president of the provincial institution, Francisco Salado, today visited the area of Faro de Calaburras, where one of the sections of the path will run.

Currently, of the eight sections into which the Coastal Path is divided as it passes through the municipality of Mijas, there are five of them in use, from La Cala to Marbella, totalling some seven kilometres. But there are still more than five kilometres to be completed, from La Cala to the border with Fuengirola, divided into three sections.

At the moment, work has been put out to tender on two of these pending stretches: from La Cala to the El Sheriff restaurant (about 700 metres) and from El Faro to the border with Fuengirola, which totals 2,150 metres. The project for the intermediate section (between the Sheriff restaurant and El Faro), which is the most complex and has a length of some 2,300 metres, has yet to be finalised.

Mata highlighted the interest of the government team in promoting and relaunching this "strategic project for Mijas" and thanked the president of the Provincial Council for his support in speeding up the completion of the Coastal Path in the municipality because, "by working together, it will be possible to promote a project that has been paralysed for five years".

The mayoress also pointed out that the Coastal Path in Mijas is very necessary both for its residents to be able to practice sport and enjoy the coastline and for visitors to have the incentive of active and sustainable tourism.

Cooperation

In this regard, Salado stressed the importance of the projects being drafted and processed in coordination with the technical team of the Coastal Path in the Provincial Council of Malaga, as this helps to speed up the actions.

He referred to the delays in the two stretches of almost three kilometres that were put out to tender by the previous government team of the Mijas Town Hall "without the necessary authorisations from the Central Government and the Andalusian Regional Government, which could lead to a delay in the processing if modifications have to be made. The local government has explained that the Provincial Council has contributed one million euros in unconditional funds for the execution of these sections", said the local government in a statement.

Likewise, he has announced that the provincial institution will also provide funding for the section that is still under study. "As we do with all the projects of the Coastal Path, we support the Town Halls with technical assistance and funding to continue implementing more sections".
