Fifty people reforest the urban woodland near the racecourse

  • Exploramás organises this initiative with the collaboration of the Environment and Cívitas Puerto Banús

40 palmettos, 35 mastic trees and 8 willows have been planted and seed bombs have been created to regenerate the Sierra de Mijas

Exploramás creates experiences that improve social and environmental surroundings. The latest was a new reforestation day in which a total of 83 native plants and seed bombs were planted last Saturday, 4th of November, in the urban woodland near the racecourse. "This is an environmental awareness campaign which consists of carrying out two types of reforestation in the urban forest in Mijas, next to the racecourse. The first is to plant native species and the second will be carried out with a super seeds workshop", said the director of Corporate Social Responsibility events at Exploramás, Eva Rosado.

The Department for the Environment of the Mijas Town Hall collaborated in this environmental action in which fifty people took part. "We helped with the logistics. We have prepared the ground so that all the participants had it a little easier because the terrain is hard and we also collaborated in the choice of species. We are forming a good native forest of cork oaks, but there was a slope that was already naturally formed with palm hearts and what we are doing is providing many more", explained the council's environmental technician Juan Luis Vega.  In total, 40 palmettos, 35 mastic trees and 8 willows were planted and, in addition, a workshop was held to create super seeds in which children and adults created with their own hands nutrients in the shape of balls with which "the soil devastated by the fires in the Sierra de Mijas will be regenerated", said Rosado. The municipal collaboration does not stop there, as Vega explained that Mijas Complementary Services will irrigate the area to encourage the growth of the planted species.

Citizen participation
The participants, fifty or so people including Cívitas Puerto Banús employees, their families and volunteers, enjoyed the experience. For young Leo Salazar, it was "very gratifying to be able to contribute to the environment". "It has been a nice experience", he added. Paqui Crespo was also satisfied with her participation in the reforestation: "let's hope that it will take off and that this will soon become a Mediterranean forest again". From the collaborating company, the Marketing Director, Benjamín Sánchez, explained the commitment of his company to the preservation of nature: "Puerto Banús has been working for four years on an environmental sustainability plan in which every year we have different activities that we carry out inside and outside the port and this is one of them".
