The Lifeguard Service closes the high season with zero casualties

  • Medical attention will be maintained along the Coastal Path on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 11am to 5pm

The Town Hall makes an "excellent" assessment of the service and recognises the work of four lifeguards for saving the life of a man in cardiorespiratory arrest

Excellent" service and "zero casualties", despite almost doubling the number of medical interventions. This is the balance of the Rescue and Lifeguard Service on the beaches of Mijas, which on Sunday 29th stopped providing full attention along the Mijas coastline. "The summer period ends and does so as it has done in recent years, with the service provided on the beaches being excellent. From the Town Hall we are satisfied and proud of the magnificent work that is being done in the last years and which is leading Mijas to be a reference from the point of view of safety", said the councillor for Beaches of the Mijas Town Hall, José Carlos Martín (Cs), who stressed that this bathing season has closed with "zero victims, which means that professionals have been watching over the safety of tourists and beach users".

Gonzalo Botta, coordinator of the Rescue and Lifeguard Service, which in Mijas is provided by the company Socorrismo Málaga, pointed out that this season has been very good "and complicated at the same time". "In the end, the objective is to have no deaths and once again this has been achieved and we are very happy with that because the number of health interventions almost doubled according to the statistics, which shows a higher degree of complexity and a large number of people on the beaches which increases the risk and the problems", he added.

This positive balance of zero casualties is reflected in the action of four lifeguards who saved the life of a person who suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest on the Sheriff beach. Claudia Miralles, one of the lifeguards involved, told how a friend of the victim came to her post to ask for help from the lifeguards. "He came to tell me that a friend of his was in bad shape, I went and found him already quite weak, but we got to him quickly and managed to save him. He felt unwell in the water, got out and was in the sand when the heart attack started. There was a doctor with whom we took turns and, as the ambulance arrived quickly, he was able to recover", recalled the young woman.

"This recognition is for the entire Rescue and Lifeguard Service, but emphasises people who at a given moment have been able to act calmly, serenely and professionally to save lives", said the mayor, who also wanted to recognise all the municipal departments for their work on the coast, especially the department for Beaches.

Adapted Beaches
The Town Hall also took stock of the service provided on the adapted beaches, where 2,000 users have passed through. "We would like to thank the rigour, dedication and commitment of this service, which translates into the care and treatment given to users at the four adapted beaches we have in the municipality", said the Town Hall's Environment and Beaches technician, Francisco Pérez.

Service from November
The Rescue and Lifeguard Service was fully manned until the end of September, while in October it was fully manned at weekends and now, the technician reminded the public, it will continue to be present during autumn and winter on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays along the Coastal Path. In this area there will be an on-call service providing medical attention, from 11am to 5pm, from the coming weekend of 4 November, Pérez recalled.

The complete service includes the seven watchtowers and all the posts with proximity chairs, the 4 platforms adapted for people with reduced mobility, and the water rescue service with 3 motorbikes patrolling the coastline. The guard service that is now starting consists of two guards on bicycles with defibrillators patrolling the entire path.
