Work on the Olympic swimming pool in La Cala is finished

  • The olympic pool is covered and heated, with a 50-metre pool where the water temperature will be kept between 24 and 30 degrees

Sports clubs, collectives and associations of the municipality visit the facilities, which will soon be operational, during an open day

The mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), and the councillor for Infrastructures, José Carlos Martín (Cs), attended the open day organised on Monday to mark the completion of the work on the Olympic swimming pool in La Cala. Through this initiative, local sports clubs, groups and associations have been able to see, first hand, this multipurpose municipal building.

"Today is a very special day because we finally see the completion of the works of this important infrastructure that will allow our neighbours of La Cala to avoid having to go to Las Lagunas to practice water sports. A multi-purpose pool that will also be able to host aquatic competitions, which includes us directly in the national circuit for this type of sport", said González, who stressed that "this pool will represent a before and after not only in the services we offer to our citizens, but also an endorsement of all the success that our federated sportsmen and women and professionals in the sector are reaping outside our borders. Now, they will be able to train in a first class pool in their own town".

For his part, Martin stressed that "we have once again kept our word and finally the centre of La Cala now has this long-standing demand. We are talking about a major project that has involved a great effort from the Infrastructure Department, but we now have the final result, which puts us at the head of the province in this type of facility", adding that "this 50-metre pool is the most modern and important in the province in terms of technical features, space, energy efficiency and, above all, for this leap in quality that will accommodate top-level sporting events. The councillor emphasised that "it is not only the swimming pool but also the multi-purpose building that is integrated into the entire sports complex".

This Monday an open day was held for local residents to visit the new Olympic swimming pool in La Cala de Mijas.

The Olympic pool is covered and heated, with a 50 metre pool where the water temperature will be kept between 24 and 30 degrees. This facility can be used for aquatic competitions with a capacity for 500 spectators. It has women's, men's and mixed changing rooms with lockers.

The building also has an administration and reception area, a meeting room, a first aid room and facilities and cleaning rooms. It also has multi-purpose spaces where sports activities such as pilates, self-defence or functional training, among others, can be carried out.

Of the constructed surface area, 1,900 square metres are for the swimming pool, 900 square metres for common areas, 350 square metres for access, service and administration and 350 square metres for basements. The multi-purpose areas are around 600 square metres.
