The programme by the Council for Culture 'Mijas es artesanía. Ciclo hecho a mano' (Mijas is Crafts. Handmade Cycle) ended last Sunday 15th with the leather goods workshop, the third of those proposed. The leather craftswoman Liana Popa gave the participants the opportunity to make a leather keyring and personalise it. The craft workshops continue to attract many people. The third proposal by Culture once again was quickly filled to capacity for a leather items workshop last weekend. According to the instructor and craftswoman Liana Popa, "they are going to learn and get to know leather work. They will get to know all the tools used in this craft. It takes time, it seems simple but it is not if we do it by hand and I want people to be aware of this and what craftsmanship means in general".
The instructor was also assisted by an experienced local, José Rivero, who has been working with leather all his life. José Rivero said that he has been working with leather for many years, "I like the more artistic and personal side. I don't work to order, I just do what I feel like doing and what I like. I have pieces that I am very fond of, such as a lamp or a door with mandalas. It is a very beautiful piece of work, an art form".
The participants were introduced to the world of leather, its treatment, dyeing, engraving formulas and personalisation of objects at the Employment Promotion building. A craft, delicate and laborious work that everyone was able to appreciate. This is the case of Eugenia Aranguiz, who expressed her gratitude for "these craft courses that are wonderful because they give us the opportunity to learn about different types of crafts, such as ceramics or leather. I am delighted and they are wonderful". Yolanda García, another of the participants, was also "delighted to be able to enjoy a workshop of these characteristics during the weekend".
All the courses have been free and with the aim to help others, with the collection of 3 kg of non-perishable items per participant for the Food Bank in Mijas, which will also benefit from this cultural proposal.
