Soroptimist awards the work of five companies that promote sustainable food

  • The Costa del Sol-based women's organisation wants to honour the work of those who bring positive change to our environment

The event took place in the plenary hall of the Mijas Town Hall

On Thursday afternoon, the Soroptimist International Costa del Sol group recognised the work of up to five companies and organisations from Malaga that promote and raise awareness about sustainable food, bringing a positive change to our environment, promoting ecological and local products, developing sustainable gastronomy or avoiding food waste, among other actions.

"The idea of organising these awards was to make the public aware that there are sustainable companies around us and also to get involved in the objective of eating seasonal food or buying zero kilometre products, which travel a short distance from where they are produced to where they are sold", summarised the president of the association, Daphne Theunissen.

Since June, Soroptimist has collected up to 18 proposals from companies and organisations in Malaga that are committed to this end, and five of them were awarded prizes, "and it is surprising that each one of them, within their own characteristics, makes the effort to find a way to produce sustainably at a time in the world when raw materials are already scarce", also valued the councillor for Foreigners of the Mijas Town Hall, Roy Pérez (PSOE). For her part, the councillor of the PP in Mijas and spokesperson for the Provincial Council of Malaga, Ana Mata, pointed out that "these awards show that in Malaga we are strong in terms of agriculture and traditional techniques, but also in terms of groups that make this type of culture visible, which we must all maintain together".

The Hevilla family from Coín was honoured for maintaining agriculture in the traditional way, also taking advantage of current cultivation techniques "such as the drip irrigation system, which has made it possible to save water, herbs and work", said Sebastián Hevilla, a member of the company, while his brother Cristóbal acknowledged that "seeing us here is a great surprise for us and encourages us to continue doing our best to continue along this path".

The organic farm Las Pencas, located in Entrerríos, received the prize for Sustainable Food Production, for offering 100% organic eggs without genetic modifications. The work of the Hotel Puente Romano, in Marbella, which grows the vegetables that it then uses in its restaurants, "and in this way we avoid the issue of disposable plastic, as well as not using pesticides and doing everything in an ecological manner", explained Loli Macías, the hotel's marketing manager.

In the category of Education and Food Awareness, the prize went to the Association for Mediterranean Agroecology (Almunia) which, among other tasks, advises farmers and livestock farmers on the certification of organic products. And in the area of Innovation and Technology, Soroptimist highlighted the service provided by Spiga Negra, which works on the recovery of forgotten wheat varieties, producing pasta and flour with unique flavours.

During the event, Soroptimist also thanked the collaboration of the administrations, entities and neighbours who support the group in its goal of continuing to promote this type of sustainable practices.
