Soroptimist awards a 4,300 euro scholarship to a UMA student

  • The award is part of the international organisation's scholarship fund and will help this student from Malaga to finance her doctoral thesis
  • Marina Muñoz García is a student at the University of Málaga

After the summer the call for applications for this scholarship was launched followed by a strict selection process

Marina Muñoz García is a student at the University of Málaga (UMA) who has been awarded a 4,300 euro grant from the Soroptimist International Europe (SIE) Scholarship Fund, which will help finance her doctoral thesis. During the last 8 years Soroptimist International Costa del Sol has applied every year for different candidates belonging to the UMA and has been able to support local students with more than 25.000 euros.
After the summer the call for applications for this scholarship was launched followed by a strict selection process, through which the most viable candidates are chosen to win the scholarship: women in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), who also do volunteer work.
According to the SI Costa del Sol Scholarship Committee, Muñoz, who is also pursuing a Master's degree in Biodiversity and the Environment, was chosen for her "interesting insights into aerobiology and palynology, as well as her research on the presence of biological particles in the atmosphere". One of the activities she is involved in is the collection of data, which can be used medically, to help control pollen allergies, a problem that is expanding due to climate change. Muñoz is helping to form a germplasm bank, in which seeds and organic material are safely stored for future use if necessary. A magnificent project through which the UMA is connected with other banks of similar characteristics around the world.
The student's enthusiasm when talking about the "unlimited" nature of science and her work as a volunteer with the Unicaja children's basketball sports project in Malaga, made her worthy of being chosen as the best candidate.
For the 2023/2024 academic year, the SIE Scholarship Fund has earmarked 83,700 euros to support 23 women in 17 countries.
Soroptimist International aims to provide opportunities and transform the lives of women and girls, develop their individual and collective potential and achieve their aspirations.
