On Friday the 29th of September, the Cultural Centre of La Cala inaugurated a new exhibition. Entitled 'Maktub', it is a pictorial exhibition by young local artist Yurdana Ríos, who wanted to explore her inner world and the possibility of a destiny with her work. That is precisely what the Arabic word 'maktub' means, "it was written", We can enjoy this exhibition until October 23rd.
Yurdana's manifest destiny turned her into a precocious artist: "Since I was a little girl I have always painted a lot and it soon became a refuge, it is my way of therapy, which is why I never wanted to show my drawings, I was too embarrassed to do so. But people insisted that I show them and little by little we got here.
If something happens in a certain way and not in another, it's because that's the way it's written. This is the way in which Yurdana, a veterinary assistant by profession, has approached the subject matter of her work, letting herself go and, as the subtitle of the exhibition says, finding her place in the world in the colours.
"When I'm watching a series, a film, or something like that, and suddenly I hear a phrase or a character that moves something inside me, I say to myself I have to draw it, and that's why almost all my paintings are based on characters... or food, because I also like to eat a lot", she said with a laugh.
The non-negotiable energy of Yurdana Ríos attracted a large number of people to the cultural centre in La Cala. As one of her childhood friends, Nancia López, acknowledged, "I feel that this is a moment that had to come because, as reality shows, Yurdana is very good, and it was only right that we should all be able to enjoy her work".
The artist's father, Eugenio Ríos, visibly moved, assured "I am proud because this has been my daughter's silent way of expressing her feelings" and in view of this "I believe that my life is fulfilled thanks to what I have received from my wife and from my children. It is the greatest happiness".
The essence of 'maktub' is that nothing happens by chance, everything follows a plan even if at first glance we are not aware of it. When little Yurdana started painting at the age of four, little did she suspect that destiny had so many joys in store for her in shapes and colours. We look forward to the ones yet to come.
