So far this year, the Plain Clothed Unit of the Mijas Local Police (SIMA) has issued more than 400 reports proposing penalties for non-compliance with the Ordinance for Safety and Coexistence, which includes the obligation to pick up our pets excrement and dilute their urine on the public thoroughfare. 

The police force is carrying out an intensive surveillance campaign to prevent such behaviour among the public, who are reminded of the obligation to carry a bottle of water when walking their pets on public roads. Failure to pick up dog excrement and dilute dog urine in the streets can lead to fines of between 50 euros and 750 euros depending on the severity of the offence.

The modification of the municipal ordinance, which included for the first time the obligation to dilute the urine of pets on public roads, came into force in 2022, making Mijas the fourth large town in the province to implement this rule. With it, the Mijas Town Hall not only seeks to raise awareness and join forces with citizens in the care and cleanliness of the city, but also to prevent damage to pavements and other street furniture caused by dog urine. 

Finally, the local administration underlines its commitment to raise awareness and inform about this issue through various campaigns developed under the slogan #CuidaMijas. Among the last ones, 'Your dog says a lot about you', where, in a humorous way, neighbours were made aware of the importance of small gestures to promote a cleaner and more cared for city. Thanks to it, dozens of pet walking kits were handed out, with bags for excrement and bottles to dilute urine.
