The Naturgat association is promoting a campaign in defence of stray cat colonies, insisting on the importance of the new Animal Welfare Law, which will come into force on the 29th of September and which, among other aspects, establishes that Town Halls must guarantee the safety and health of these felines. For now, Naturgat has published stickers with messages promoting respect for cat colonies, although it is also working on the organisation of upcoming events and training sessions, said its president, Francisco de la Torre, to emphasise the importance of applying this new state regulation “because the laws must be complied with, so we want to publicise it and for people to understand that cat colonies also have their rights”. As for the control of these colonies by the local councils, De la Torre stressed that, among their responsibilities, “they must protect them, sterilise them, deworm them, identify them with microchips and carry out education and public awareness campaigns, all to eliminate the clichés that still surround stray cats about whether they transmit diseases and other issues”, he concluded.
